With the new addition of the Tournaments for Turf initiative, the Park Operations Division would like to introduce our tournament volunteer program. The purpose of the program is to assist in maintaining a safe and quality tournament for all participants and fans as well as to ensure the state-of-the-art turf fields will be kept in the best possible shape for the community.

All Tournament Volunteers are required to be at least 18 years of age. Site managers will need to be familiar with the Field Rules and Regulations and be able to effectively communicate the need to follow these rules to field users. All volunteers will receive training by the tournament director to guarantee they are familiar with these regulations as well as sport specific rules that will apply for each tournament. The individual position descriptions are detailed below:

Site Managers/Field Marshalls:

The main responsibility of a site manager is to make sure the tournament runs smoothly. Set up/clean up any necessary equipment, tables, scoreboards etc. Make sure teams and officials are there and in the right location. Report scores. Record and report injuries. Answer any and all questions and make sure all rules and policies are followed. Must be available for at least 5 hour shifts but would be beneficial if they are available for longer shifts.

Statistics Keeper:

As a stat keeper, one must be familiar with the sport being played and needs minimal training on how to record stats. A stat sheet will be available on site for each game and then will be turned in to the tournament director to be posted on the Tournaments for Turf website. Must be able to stay and keep stats for at least 4 games but would be beneficial if they are available for more.

As a scorekeeper, one must be familiar with the sport being played. Minimal to moderate training is necessary. Score sheets/books and/or scoreboard will be on site. Must be able to stay and keep score for at least 4 games but would be beneficial if they are available for more.

Identification, such as a picture identification card and a park shirt with an agency logo, will help the Tournament Volunteers stand out in the public as an official representative of the Park Authority. This visibility will help volunteers be recognized as someone with authority which will aid them in carrying out their responsibilities. The park shirt and identification cards will be issued to all volunteers by Park Operations staff. Identification cards and shirts shall be returned to the Park Authority when an individual drops out of the program.

*All volunteers will receive entry to our on-site hospitality tent which will have drinks and snacks!

The Fairfax County Park Authority is dedicated to providing superior recreational opportunities for an ever-changing 1.1 million resident community with diverse backgrounds and interests. A 2004 Needs Assessment clearly identified a deficit of 95 rectangular fields to meet the growing population in our county. In response, we have invested in the conversion of 48 natural grass fields to synthetic turf fields. This, as a result has significantly increased access and field capacity, improved playing conditions for user groups and reduced maintenance requirements and costs.

Park Authority Seeks Flag Football Teams For Tournament

However, the time has come to address the turf replacement costs required to maintain these state-of-the-art athletic fields in order to ensure that field users continue to enjoy the high quality experience currently provided. The Park Authority is committed to providing and maintaining these fields, yet there is limited funding available to do so. Therefore, we will be hosting tournaments in collaboration with our community partners to raise funds for our synthetic turf replacement reserve.

Support for our “Tournaments for Turf” initiative will be greatly appreciated by the Park Authority and will benefit the community and our fields significantly! Here are ways you can help:
