Lake Accotink Park

Volunteer Opportunities -
Lake Accotink Park

If you enjoy the outdoors and keeping some variety in your life, consider volunteering your time and talents to the park. Hours are flexible, allowing you to volunteer as little or as much as you like. We will be glad to help you choose an assignment that nurtures your interests and puts your skills to good use. And you'll be helping to protect and enhance this vital public space, located in the heart of Springfield.

If you are interested in any of our volunteer opportunities, please contact Julie Tahan, Assistant Park Manager, telephone 703-569-0285 or via e-mail. We hope to hear from you!

The following volunteer opportunities are currently available at Lake Accotink Park.

  • The Invasive Management Area (IMA) Program: is a volunteer-led pilot project in partnership between the Fairfax County Park Authority and Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District designed to reduce invasive plants on our parklands.

Friends of Accotink Creek (www.accotink.org/AboutFACC.htm) has volunteered to coordinate IMA invasive species removal at Lake Accotink Park, targeting a large area of kudzu in a wetlands area of the park.
  • Event Facilitator: Help make events at the park memorable for families who seek quality time together. We need greeters, runners, activity facilitators, traffic control monitors, and help with set-up and clean-up. Qualifications include ability to communicate and interact positively with people of diverse ages and cultures; a desire to be helpful; flexibility, patience and enthusiasm.
  • Gardener/Landscaping Specialist Help maintain and beautify gardens and outdoor areas. Assignments are tailored to skill level and may include mulching, propagation, transplanting, weeding, watering, and winterizing flower beds. Basic knowledge of horticulture is helpful, including ability to distinguish native species from non-native invasives.
  • Maintenance Specialist Helps maintain buildings, picnic structures, playground, and other facilities that enhance enjoyment of the park for visitors. Depending on level of expertise, work may include cleaning, painting, and basic repairs.
  • Natural or Cultural Resources Specialist Work with park staff to further develop natural and cultural resource programs, including visitor center displays, educational programs, outdoor signage, and other special projects.
  • Office Assistant Register customers for classes and events, handle phone inquiries, prepare flyers, perform other general office work as needed. Qualifications include ability to communicate and interact positively with people of diverse ages and cultures; a desire to be helpful; flexibility, patience and enthusiasm.
  • Scout Program Coordinator Develop, coordinate and evaluate leadership and service projects for eagle scout candidates, community groups, and others seeking to perform volunteer service in the park. Identify projects that address the park's mission and priorities.
  • Trail Watch Volunteer Observe and report on activities and conditions of the trails. This job is perfect for anyone who already spends free time walking or biking the trails. Report safety hazards, suspicious activities, and maintenance concerns. Give other trail users information on trail safety, etiquette and environment issues.
  • Trout Stocking Volunteer Join the "bucket brigade" during Spring Trout Season at the park. The trout truck comes loaded with trout that need to be stocked in the stream. The more volunteers that are on hand, the faster the job gets done. Volunteers who help from start to finish receive a free pass to fish for the rest of the day. Volunteers make this program possible, so please join in!
