Green Spring Gardens Park- Alexandria

Watering the plantsGreen Spring Gardens Park, located in the Alexandria/Annandale area, includes woodlands, ponds, and display and demonstration gardens which provide not only beauty but also ideas for visitors to use in their home landscaping. The Green Spring Horticulture Center has a greenhouse with an extensive collection of indoor plants, a large meeting room or lecture room and a horticulture reference library, all available to the public. Practical horticulture information is provided to the public through lectures, workshops, and guided tours. Also in the park is a renovated 18th century manor house used as an art gallery and to host teas that include tours of the various gardens.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers at Green Spring Gardens can volunteer as much or as little as they are available. To be considered a full time volunteer by the Fairfax County Park Authority you must volunteer eight hours per month. For specific information on any of the volunteer opportunities listed below, please call Green Spring at 703-642-5173 and a member of the staff will answer all of your questions.

The following opportunities are currently available:

Gardeners

  • Weekdays only
  • Work inside or outside with Green Spring Gardens horticulturists.
  • No horticulture or gardening knowledge necessary. We will teach you in a hands-on environment – the best way to learn.
  • If you have a specific area of gardening you are interested in (ie: vegetables, herbs, native plants, propagation) please indicate your interest on your application and we will assign you to the horticulturist in charge of that area.

Visitor Information Specialists

  • Weekday and Weekends (morning and afternoon shifts)
  • Greet the public, answer phone inquiries, register people for educational programs, assist Green Spring Gardens’ office staff.
  • Assist with retail sales.
  • Great way to share your love of horticulture and Green Spring with the public.
  • Expand your knowledge of horticulture without getting dirty.

Manor House Host

  • Mostly weekends (Sunday afternoons) and Thursday afternoons (April – October)
  • Great for those who love horticulture, history and art.
  • Primary duty: Pouring tea during our very popular afternoon tea programs.
  • As an added bonus Hosts get to hear all of the educational programs that accompany each tea.

Garden Tour Docent

  • Thursday afternoons (April – October)
  • Share your love of horticulture, history and Green Spring with the public on guided tours through the gardens.
  • No horticulture or history experience needed. We will teach you.

Garden Gate Plant Shop Sales Associate

  • Weekday and weekend.
  • Assist with sales, inventory, labeling, and signage.
  • Some plant knowledge helpful but not necessary.

Children’s Program Leader

  • Weekdays and some weekends.
  • Help educate children of all ages.
  • Staff a monthly drop-in story program featuring stories related to gardens, the outdoors and nature.

Fairfax County Farmers’ Market Master and Assistant Master

  • Weekday and weekends (depending on market – May - November)
  • Primary duty: Managing market location.
  • Assist with vendor selection.
  • Help vendor find their spaces on market day.
  • Be available to help vendors and customers during market hours.
  • Make sure market complies with all state and local regulations.

History Researcher

  • Become a detective and help with all aspects of uncovering our over 200 years of history.
  • Great for history buffs or for those who like to work on projects independently.

Volunteer Information Assistant

  • Afternoons (Weekdays and weekends)
  • Help the public use library resources including books, periodicals, seed catalogs and other resources.
  • Familiarity with computers and Internet searching.

Library Assistant

  • Afternoons (Weekdays)
  • Assist Green Spring librarian with the development and maintenance of the library collections and services. May include cataloging, processing materials, shelving and shelf reading, as well as developing and maintaining other library resources

  • All full time volunteers (those who volunteer at least eight hours per month) are entitled to one free class at an FCPA RecCenter per quarter.
