VOLUNTEER AT GEORGE WASHINGTON RECenter

Volunteers enjoy promoting the benefits of regular physical activity, learning new skills, making friends and serving their community. The volunteer program gives people the opportunity to provide assistance with fitness equipment orientations, work at the front desk, lead classes, clean the RECenter and help with administrative duties and other tasks. Volunteers range in age from 16 to 80. Groups, including students from Fairfax County Public Schools, are also welcome to volunteer at GW RECenter.

CURRENTLY IN NEED OF...

  Front Desk Associate
Title: Front Desk Associate
Goal: To meet the site's goal of excellence in customer service and foster an appreciation of recreational opportunities in the local community.
Duties: Greets the public and orients them to the facility, informs visitors about site rules and programs, checks user passes, answers phone calls and inquiries, assists with programs and projects as needed, helps to take care of the front desk equipment and working area, and may handle sales of RECenter passes and/or other site specific items.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years or age or older. Volunteer must be an enthusiastic individual willing to interact with the public in a positive manner. Must be organized and have skills to deal with various tasks.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Certifications/Tests: Background check required for volunteers handling cash transactions.
Time Required: Average of four hours per week. Prefer six-month commitment.

  Administrative Assistant
Title: Administrative Assistant
Goal: To assist with administrative and clerical support at the site including planning, coordination, and evaluation of programs and activities.
Duties: Answers and returns phone calls, keeps records, updates files, makes refunds, creates spreadsheets, performs data-entry, types and handles various projects as assigned.
Qualifications: Ability to communicate and interact with people of diverse ages and cultures. Pleasant telephone etiquette. Ability to work independently. Computer literate. Volunteer must be 16 years of age or older.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Certifications/Tests: None.
Time Required: Average of four hours per week. Prefer a one-year commitment.

  Promotions Assistant
Title: Promotions Assistant
Goal: To enhance public awareness of RECenter/Park services and the benefits they provide to the community.
Duties Each volunteer's duties will vary according to the requirements of the site. Some examples include preparing signs, writing public service announcements, designing posters or bulletin boards for display at area businesses, attending local fairs and festivals to promote programs and activities, and visiting area corporations to increase RECenter fitness pass sales. Light to heavy lifting.
Qualifications:Must be 18 years of age or older. Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with people. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Specific skills needed vary with duties. Commitment to help citizens improve their physical and mental well being and quality of life through the use of RECenter/Park facilities and services.
Training: Candidates for this position must already possess all promotions qualifications. Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Certifications/Tests: None.
Time Required: Average of four hours per week. Prefer a one-year commitment.

THE BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING ...

Free RECenter facility use: Volunteers who maintain an average of four hours of service per week or three weekly classes per class session as an Adapted Aquatics assistant, can use their RECenter’s general facilities free of charge

Community Park Benefits: Currently active Community park volunteers who have consistently maintained an average of four hours of service per week can use EITHER the Free RECenter facility Use of the partnering RECenter, OR their site’s Community Park benefit.

Free RECenter classes: Volunteers who have served a minimum of 32 hours and maintain an average of eight hours of service per week, or volunteer as an Adapted Aquatics assistant for four weekly classes per class session are eligible to take one free FCPA class per session on a space available basis.

Family Discount Pass: All FCPA volunteers are entitled to purchase a 25-visit pass for their family use to any RECenter at a special county employee rate.
