Volunteer at Lee District RECenter

We love our volunteers here at Lee District and welcome newcomers throughout the year! Our volunteer program is very strong, and it’s a great place to meet new people. The staff is very grateful for the help that is offered by our volunteers and in return, they make it a point to show their appreciation. If you would like to give back to your community, learn new skills or just become part of this fun and dedicated team start the process by applying here!

HIGHLIGHTS...

Family Recreation Area
at Lee District Park

Plans are underway for a family activity complex unlike anything else in Fairfax County or the metropolitan area - a dedicated outdoor recreation area that will engage children in physical activity and spark their imaginations with creative play. This magical place will bring families together with old-fashioned and thoroughly modern play elements that are accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. The Family Recreation Area will be located within the 138-acre Lee District Park, just three miles from the Beltway.
The Family Recreation Area will includes:
• A Treehouse overlooking a forest and stream valley. The Treehouse will be entered from gently-sloping ramps accessible to children and adults in wheelchairs or with limited mobility.
• A Spray Park where water showers from fanciful structures, providing a safe and fun activity on hot summer days.
• A Playground with slides, swings and other equipment specially designed for use by all children, including those with disabilities.
• An old-fashioned, fully accessible Carousel.
• A Family Picnic Area with covered shelters.
• Restrooms, changing rooms and other support facilities for a day of family fun. Construction of this first phase of the project is planned to begin in early 2010 for a summer 2011 opening

Doyle Jamison

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Doyle James Jamison
Lee District RECenter’s
2011 Outstanding Volunteer
of the Year

Also known as Mr. J, Jim is very friendly and a grandfatherly figure in our RECenter, especially in the preschools. Although he does not work directly with the children - they all know who he is and that he is a "big helper". You can usually spot Jim cutting out shapes for the weekly preschool art projects, summer camps and tot classes.

When the summer concerts roll around every June, Jim is the first to sign up to help with directing traffic and concert set-up. You will also see him every spring break at the welcome/registration table for our annual Lose the Training Wheels camp. In addition, Jim has volunteered in the fitness center, at the 4th of July fireworks and during the annual flu shots for the public. Jim also signed up to organize and terminate all the "Junk Mail" that comes in to the RECenter. He made hundreds of phone calls, striking our name off mailing lists and recycling the mailed pieces!

Last year, Jim reached his 5 year mark as a volunteer with Lee District. In 2010 alone, Jim volunteered over 160 hours and received the President's Service Award, which included a lapel pin with the Presidential Seal on in, as well as a letter and certificate signed by the President.

In addition to his many talents offered to the RECenter, Jim volunteers at the Carpenter's Shelter in Alexandria, furnishing Friday night meals to the homeless every other month. He also helps distribute food to needy families at the Rising Hope Church. He retired from the Dept. of Agriculture in 1997 and has committed to "serving other people" since then.

Jim's good nature and willingness to help where ever needed make him a "favorite" and a treat to be around!
