Position Description
Title: Adapted Aquatics Instructor Assistant
Goal: To create a comfortable learning environment for physically and/or mentally challenged students that will result in a positive experience in which safety is the primary concern for all participants.
Duties: Works closely (this will require getting wet!) with one or two students during class under the guidance of an Adapted Aquatics Instructor. Helps to set goals for the participants who are working on swimming skills or water adjustment skills. Light Lifting
Qualifications: Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Exceptions may be made for 14-15 year olds based on special skills or a dedication to working with the disabled community. Under the age of 14 may volunteer ONLY if accompanied by a parent or other adult. The ability to look beyond the disability and at the individual is of utmost importance. The volunteer must be comfortable in waist deep water.
Training: Must attend one five-hour training session prior to the start of classes. (This training includes both a classroom session and a pool session and is offered four times per year.) Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date.
Certifications/Tests: None
Time Required: Average of two hours per week. Must commit for one complete session.

Position Description
Title: Adapted Class Instructor Assistant

Position Description
Title: Administrative Assistant
Goal: To assist with administrative and clerical support at the site including planning, coordination, and evaluation of programs and activities.
Duties: Answers and returns phone calls, keeps records, updates files, makes refunds, creates spreadsheets, performs data-entry, types and handles various projects as assigned.
Qualifications: Ability to communicate and interact with people of diverse ages and cultures. Pleasant telephone etiquette. Ability to work independently. Computer literate. Volunteer must be 16 years of age or older.

Position Description
Title: Assistant Volunteer Manager
Goal: To assist Volunteer Manager with volunteer program operations.
Duties: Under supervision of the Volunteer Manager, determines volunteer needs, writes job descriptions, manages scheduling of volunteers, maintains volunteer records, completes monthly reports, and provides administrative support as needed.
Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Strong organizational skills and the ability to work well with people. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Administrative skills including typing, filing, and record keeping.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training and Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.

Position Description
Title: Carousel Operator
Goal: To operate the carrousel rides in a safe manner for the public.
Duties: The volunteer will ensure that the public is provided a safe ride. The volunteer will carry out safety checks of all rides and amenities; collect tickets for each ride; communicate rules in a friendly but firm way. Light to heavy lifting
Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. The volunteer must be able to operate the carrousel rides and must enjoy interaction with the public.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Certifications/Tests: Must complete and stay current on CPR (every 2 years) and First Aid (every 3 years) certifications. The training must be completed within 60 days of volunteer start date.
Time Required: One weekend day or holiday per week from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Position Description
Title: Class Instructor
Goal: To instruct land or aquatics classes achieving the goals of the class or program to ensure that students are provided a safe, comfortable and effective learning experience.
Duties: Carries out the class objectives of the program as defined by the program staff, including but not limited to creation of lesson plans, verbal instruction, demonstrating the skill, providing feedback to students, answering questions, providing written material. The instructor is responsible for checking the class rosters to ensure that all participants have registered for the class. In the event that an instructor will miss a class during the session he/she is responsible for finding a substitute, coordinating with the programming supervisor, and orienting the substitute to the policies and procedures of FCPA. The instructor is responsible for set up and take down of any required equipment before and after class. Reports all injuries, accidents, and other problems or concerns to the program supervisor. . Light to moderate lifting.
Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Demonstrated interest and proficiency in the specific class or program subject through relevant education such as certifications and degrees. Examples include belts in martial arts, titles in dog training, and the like.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Certifications/Tests: Must maintain current certification as required by the specific class. These certifications may be obtained from the program staff responsible for the class.
Time Required: One class per session or for eight weeks. Some may be longer.

Position Description
Title: Class Instructor Assistant
Goal: To assist instructors of land classes (those not conducted in RECenter swimming pools) in achieving the goals of the class or program to ensure that students are provided a safe, comfortable and effective learning experience.
Duties: Carries out the directions of the instructor which may include demonstrating the skill being taught to the entire class while the instructor provides feedback to individuals or small groups, or working with one or more students in developing the skill that the instructor is teaching. Helps set up and take down equipment before and after class and helps maintain necessary records. Reports all injuries, accidents, and other problems or concerns to supervisor and completes required forms in a timely manner. .Light to moderate lifting.
Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Demonstrated interest and proficiency in the specific class or program subject through relevant education such as certifications and degrees. Examples include belts in martial arts, titles in dog training, and the like.

Position Description
Title: Dog Obedience Training Assistant Instructor
Goal: To promote interest in the sport of dog obedience by providing direct training or assistance to the dog obedience instructor and student handlers.
Duties: Help set up and take down/put away training equipment. Work closely with small groups of handlers or individuals to reinforce obedience exercises and training techniques. Lead class in obedience exercise, providing instructor opportunity to furnish feedback to individual handlers. Demonstrate exercise/techniques as required during classes. Gather information regarding local canine events and United Kennel Club (UKC)/American Kennel Club (AKC) competitions for dissemination to handlers. Light to heavy lifting.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. Able to communicate well, analyze dog/handler interaction and behaviors, develop and recommend effective training techniques/alternative. Knowledge of diverse training methods and rules for all levels of UKC/AKC obedience competitions.
Training: Must have completed basic through advanced dog obedience training classes and earned an obedience title with at least one dog.

Position Description
Title: FallProof Class Assistant
Goal: The Balance and Mobility Program adopts a multidimensional approach to the assessment and treatment of balance-related problems. Balance and gait assessments are provided to determine the most effective training program. Volunteers will assist members of the training program to ensure successful participation.
Duties: Under the direction of the program instructor, the volunteer will assist participants in class activities. Volunteer will offer physical assistance for safe and effective instruction and participation. Volunteer will offer support and encouragement to the participants during the program.
Qualifications: Volunteer must be at least 21 years old. Good communication skills are essential to this position. Ability to offer physical support and assistance is required
Training: Volunteer will attend an orientation and training as well as FCPA safety training.
Time Required: One hour per week for an 8 week session is required. Prefer a 6 month commitment.

Position Description
Title: FitLinxx Coordinator Assistant
Goal: To assist the FitLinxx Coordinator with clerical duties to provide customers more and better feedback to improve their training programs. To increase safety and effectiveness of fitness facilities by freeing up the FitLinxx Coordinator to spend more time on the floor with customers.
Duties: Assists the FitLinxx Coordinator by: Doing light office work such as filing, copying, making phone calls and updating files. Helping process FitLinxx triggers. Designing, making and distributing promotional posters, flyers and bulletin board displays. Helping to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the fitness office.
Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Ability to communicate and interact with people of all ages. Background or interest in fitness. Comfortable working in a public setting and approaching people who may need assistance. Demonstrated ability to effectively orient weight room users.

Position Description
Title: Fitness Room Attendant
Goal: To meet the RECenter's goal of excellence in customer service and to help fitness room users learn how to use the fitness equipment properly and safely.
Duties: Greets fitness room users. Helps administer fitness room use. Provides equipment orientation upon request and if needed educates users in proper use of equipment to include safety, Fitlinxx/Cybex principles and equipment adjustment. Answers customers' questions or directs them to the appropriate resource. Performs light cleaning and sanitizing of the weight room equipment. Helps organize and maintain fitness room and equipment and reports equipment needing repair. Ensures weight room rules are followed. Light to heavy lifting.

Title: Fitness Room Monitor/Greeter
Goal:To meet the RECenter's goal of excellence in customer service and foster an appreciation of recreational opportunities in the local community.
Duties: Greets the fitness room patrons and keeps count of all persons using the room; checks for valid entrance stamp; answers questions on usage regulations; reports equipment needing repair, and can assist with maintaining the room in proper order and cleanliness. Light to heavy lifting

Position Description
Title: Freestyle Ice Skating Monitor
Goal: To provide assistance to the skaters while ensuring them an organized, safe and smoothly run freestyle session.
Duties: The volunteer will ensure the safety of the skaters and contracted coaches at all times by enforcing the rules, monitoring the traffic flow, and attending to the needs of the freestyle skaters. The volunteer will work in accordance with the rules provided for the freestyle sessions. The volunteer will record attendance and corresponding payment and pay close attention to skater etiquette and contracted coaches during the freestyle sessions.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. The volunteer must have strong ice skating skills and be a well-organized individual. Must be willing to assist and interact with the skaters in a positive and consistent manner. Certification in First Aid is required. Current Freestyle Skaters or their family members and ice skating coaches are not eligible for this position.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required. On the job training with experienced ice rink operator will supplement prior experience.

Position Description
Title: Front Desk Associate
Goal: To meet the site's goal of excellence in customer service and foster an appreciation of recreational opportunities in the local community.
Duties: Greets the public and orients them to the facility, informs visitors about site rules and programs, checks user passes, answers phone calls and inquiries, assists with programs and projects as needed, helps to take care of the front desk equipment and working area, and may handle sales of RECenter passes and/or other site specific items.

Position Description
Title: General Support Assistant
Goal: To assist with clerical duties, help enhance public awareness, help maintain public facilities to provide a pleasant, clean and safe environment for users, and provide support during special events.
Duties: Assists with light duties such as filing, copying, making phone calls and updating files. Assists with designing, making and distributing promotional posters, flyers, bulletin displays and class passes. Helps keep sites clean and neat. Position Description
Title: Graphic Artist
Goal: To provide facility programs with signage and decoration in a tasteful and relevant manner that facilitates the distribution of information for programs and promotions.
Duties: Under the supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator, to provide artistic and informational elements for the facility in a timely manner. Decorate bulletin boards; create monthly signage for the main wall calendar, temporary in-facility signage, event posters, and any other artistic projects that are requested by the Volunteer Coordinator.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years or age or older. Artistic and creative skills with the ability to follow directions and work independently with a minimum of supervision. Graphic artist skills include the ability to write and edit copy, type and create signage utilizing computer programs, printer and photocopier. Create signage or decorations with efficient use of materials.
Training: Candidates for this position must already possess all graphic artist qualifications. Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.

Position Description
Title: Gym Attendant
Goal: To assist patrons with gym operation and track usage.
Duties: The volunteer will ensure the safety of the public using the gym by enforcing the rules, controlling games and participants, access to and from gym and assisting in weight room. The volunteer will handle any hostile individuals attempting to use or misuse the gym. Light to heavy lifting.
Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Ability to communicate and interact with people and handle hostile individuals is a must. Background in athletics and a working knowledge of court games as well as experience in crowd control and security is preferred. Some background in conflict management or conflict resolution is necessary.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required. On the job training working with experienced gym attendant will supplement prior experience in some form of security or crowd control.

Position Description
Title: Historical Research Assistant
Goal: To assist with administrative and clerical support at the site including duties pertaining to natural and cultural history interpretation and to provide a historical perspective.
Duties: Research and document history of sites. Transcribe wills and deeds from 1700's & 1800's. Visit Libraries and court houses in Fairfax City and Loudoun County, reading through old court cases gathering information and making copies, preparing detailed files. Light lifting.
Qualifications: Ability to work independently and transcribe historical documents, Good research and organizational skills, Interest in Historical Research, Computer literate, willing to visit multiple research sites. Volunteer must be 16 years of age or older.

Position Description
Title: Ice Instructor Aide for Group Lesson
Goal: To assist instructors of ice lessons in achieving the goals of the class to ensure that students are provided a safe, comfortable and effective learning experience.
Duties: Carries out the directions of the instructor which may include demonstrating the skill being taught while the instructor provides feedback to individuals or small groups, or working with one or more students in developing the skill that the instructor is teaching. Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. Demonstrated interest and proficiency in the specific class. A minimum skating proficiency level of completion of testing through one of following:
  • USFSA Basic 8
  • ISI Freestyle 2
  • Mount Vernon RECenter Hockey 4

This is in effect for volunteers starting after June 21, 2003.

Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required. On the job training working with experienced ice instructor/coach will supplement prior experience.
Certifications/Tests: None.
Time Required: Average of four hours per week. Hours are earned at a doubled rate. So for 2 hours worked, 4 hours are earned.

Position Description
Title: Ice Skate Rental Associate
Goal: To provide assistance to the patrons renting ice skates.
Duties: The volunteer will greet the public and assist patrons requesting rental of ice skates. The volunteer will assess the condition of the skates, checking for loose screws, dull blades and damaged laces, and report problems to his/her supervisor. Light to heavy lifting.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. The volunteer must be an enthusiastic individual able to assist and interact with the public in a positive manner. Certification in First Aid is required.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.

Position Description
Title: Invasive Management Area Program
Goal: To reduce invasive plants on our parklands.
Duties: The volunteer will assist in removal of invasive plant species. A volunteer-led pilot project in partnership between the Fairfax County Park Authority and Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District designed to reduce invasive plants on our parklands.
Qualifications: Ability to tolerate working outdoors. Position requires bending, walking and standing for extended periods as well as other physically challenging tasks.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.

Position Description
Title: Landscaper
Goal: To help with overall maintenance of the indoor and outdoor plants and flower beds and general beautification of the RECenter or park.
Duties: Helps prepare flower beds for planting, assists site manager with ordering plants and flowers, mulches flower beds to maintain ground moisture, removes dead plants or flowers, weeds flower beds, waters and helps winterize and clean out flower beds as necessary. Light to heavy lifting.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. A genuine interest in landscaping and knowledge of care for plants and trees. Prior landscaping experience is preferred.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.

Time Required: Volunteer is required to donate an average of four hours per week over the course of the year for the upkeep of the flower beds and general maintenance of plants.

Position Description
Title: Lose the Training Wheels Assistant
Goal: To assist an individual with a disability to participate successfully in the class and provide a successful experience.
Duties: Volunteers will run alongside the child as they learn and provide physical and emotional support. Also, in need of administrative assistants to help with check-in and other necessary paperwork.

Position Description
Title: Maintenance Support
Goal: To help maintain facilities in order to provide a pleasant, clean and safe environment for RECenter or park users.
Duties: Cares for variety of internal and external areas of the building to include cleaning and maintenance of club and weight rooms, mezzanine and office areas, pool and changing room facilities and overall upkeep of site cleanness and appearance. Assists site custodian with other maintenance duties as required. . Light to heavy lifting.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. Interest in building maintenance work. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. Prior maintenance work is preferred.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.

Position Description
Title: Mini Golf Monitor
Goal: Contribute to the fun and safety of the miniature golf game.
Duties: Volunteer to assist those guests who wish to play miniature golf. This includes sale of admission, providing putter, ball and score card and collecting equipment at end of game. Volunteer will also sell refreshments. While the course is being under-utilized, the volunteer will tend to general tidiness and cleanliness of the course and/or watering of the vegetation surrounding the golf course. Light to moderate lifting.

Position Description
Title: Newsletter
Goal: To gather information, develop ideas, and write articles on RECenter/Park Programs, volunteer programs, customers/staff, and other related programs, issues and concerns. Interview subjects for articles and create advertisements for classes, events and opportunities.
Duties: The Newsletter Editor develops a quarterly newsletter for distribution to customers, volunteers, staff and other interested parties. Specific duties include gathering information and interviewing customers, staff, volunteers and other participants to write articles. Apply design and page layout skills using various design software to produce the newsletter and to prepare the electronic files for reproduction. Edit text and design for submission to printer. Helps to prepare and plan for distribution.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older, with qualifications or interest in journalism or creative writing. Experience in editing and developing newsletters, school newspaper or school yearbook is preferred. Experience using Microsoft Publisher is preferred.

Position Description
Title: Park/Trail Monitor
Goal: To help maintain oversight of the parks and trails in order to provide a more secure, pleasant, clean and safe environment for Park users and to help preserve the ecological condition of the park.
Duties: Monitor the safety, maintenance and ecological condition of the park and trails in the course of walking, riding or running through park areas including trails, walkways, playground areas, wooded areas, general recreational areas. The purpose of this activity is to help identify areas in need of maintenance or improvement and to identify any instances or occurrences in which violation of park rules and regulations or other illegal activity is occurring so that appropriate action can be taken. Volunteers will be requested to help serve as good stewards of the park by picking up litter as practical during their use of the park.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. Volunteers must have an interest in maintenance of the environment and preservation of overall park quality and the recreational safety of individuals.

Position Description
Title: Pottery Lab Assistant
Goal: Assist in pottery program tasks to ensure efficient operation of the pottery lab to ensure users achieve effective and efficient use of their time in the pottery lab.
Duties: Duties involve: monitoring users of the Pottery Lab for proper use of equipment; coordination of hourly fees and firing fees, sale and sale of lab passes and clay; helping to maintain cleanliness of the pottery lab and cleaning up after lab sessions; reclaiming clay, preparing kiln shelves, loading and unloading pottery from kilns and other tasks based on training. Goal: To enhance public awareness of RECenter/Park services and the benefits they provide to the community. Duties Each volunteer's duties will vary according to the requirements of the site. Some examples include preparing signs, writing public service announcements, designing posters or bulletin boards for display at area businesses, attending local fairs and festivals to promote programs and activities, and visiting area corporations to increase RECenter fitness pass sales. Position Description
Title: Racquetball Coordinator
Goal: To provide administrative and operational support for the RECenter Racquetball Ladder.
Duties: Under the supervision of the RECenter Volunteer Coordinator, the volunteer recruits interested ball players, and arranges matches for beginning, intermediate and advanced players. Keeps participants informed about racquetball matches and related activities. Coaches when and where necessary. Makes equipment available for sale, if in stock. Serves as liaison between client participants and the RECenter administrative staff.
Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Enthusiastic and energetic individual who has developed expertise in racquetball rules, regulations and techniques. Knowledge of other sports would be useful.
Training: Candidates for this position must already possess expertise in racquetball. Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Certifications/Tests: Must complete and stay current on CPR (every 2 years) and First Aid (every 3 years) certifications. The training must be completed within 60 days of volunteer start date.

Goal: To enhance RECenters and other FCPA park facilities and their service to customers by documenting and evaluating the quality of service provided in response to telephone and walk in inquiries.
Duties: The volunteer makes anonymous calls from home or from headquarters or visits to "shop" each RECenter or facility as a customer. Follows and completes the Secret Shopper Evaluation form for each call. Evaluates, records, and reports call information.
Qualifications: Experience with customer service preferred. Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently and good communication skills are essential. Volunteer must be at least 21 years old.
Training: Volunteer must attend the division and section orientations which will be 2-4 hours.

Position Description
Title: Slide Attendant
Goal: To ensure orderly and safe use of the pool slides by RECenter customers.
Duties: The opening shift volunteer will check with the head lifeguard or aquatics manager on duty to ensure the required safety checks of the slides were completed prior to their opening. The volunteer will strictly enforce the slide and stairwell rules. The volunteer will position her/himself on the first landing to clearly observe the exit areas of both slides. The volunteer will control slider dispatch until the prior slider has exited their corresponding slide. Ability to climb stairs required.

Position Description
Title:Spray Park Monitor
Goal:To meet the sites goal of excellence in customer service and provide a clean and sanitary environment always keeping safety in mind.
Duties:Greets the public and orients them to the facility, informs visitors about site rules. Keeps count of all persons using the facility, checks that children enter and exit with adults or have permission of adults. Know all custodial jobs assigned and comply with the schedule of completing them in order to assure a clean and sanitary environment for both staff and customers. Perform regular custodial and maintenance duties relating to the spray pad, deck, changing rooms. Reporting and documenting all accidents/incidents in a clear, concise manner, and communicates issues to the main building immediately. Completes other duties and tasks assigned by supervisors or Duty Manager, as well as, assists park staff with other site operations and events.
