VOLUNTEER AT CUB RUN RECenter

Our volunteers tell us that volunteering at Cub Run RECenter is a rewarding experience. Volunteers not only help our community but they also earn FREE membership at the RECenter where they volunteer. Volunteers can forge friendships and meet customers and co-workers who share their interests. They learn more about all the wonderful parks and facilities that Fairfax County has to offer. We hope you will decide to join us; we are looking forward to working with you.

CURRENTLY IN NEED OF...

 Adapted Aquatics Class Assistant
Title: Adapted Aquatics Instructor Assistant
Goal: To create a comfortable learning environment for physically and/or mentally challenged students that will result in a positive experience in which safety is the primary concern for all participants.
Duties: Works closely (this will require getting wet!) with one or two students during class under the guidance of an Adapted Aquatics Instructor. Helps to set goals for the participants who are working on swimming skills or water adjustment skills. Light Lifting
Qualifications: Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Exceptions may be made for 14-15 year olds based on special skills or a dedication to working with the disabled community. Under the age of 14 may volunteer ONLY if accompanied by a parent or other adult. The ability to look beyond the disability and at the individual is of utmost importance. The volunteer must be comfortable in waist deep water.
Training: Must attend one five-hour training session prior to the start of classes. (This training includes both a classroom session and a pool session and is offered four times per year.) Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date.
Certifications/Tests: None
Time Required: Average of two hours per week. Must commit for one complete session.

 Front Desk Associate
Title: Front Desk Associate
Goal: To meet the site's goal of excellence in customer service and foster an appreciation of recreational opportunities in the local community.
Duties: Greets the public and orients them to the facility, informs visitors about site rules and programs, checks user passes, answers phone calls and inquiries, assists with programs and projects as needed, helps to take care of the front desk equipment and working area, and may handle sales of RECenter passes and/or other site specific items.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years or age or older. Volunteer must be an enthusiastic individual willing to interact with the public in a positive manner. Must be organized and have skills to deal with various tasks.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Certifications/Tests: Background check required for volunteers handling cash transactions.
Time Required: Average of four hours per week. Prefer six-month commitment.

 Administrative Assistant
Title: Administrative Assistant
Goal: To assist with administrative and clerical support at the site including planning, coordination, and evaluation of programs and activities.
Duties: Answers and returns phone calls, keeps records, updates files, makes refunds, creates spreadsheets, performs data-entry, types and handles various projects as assigned.
Qualifications: Ability to communicate and interact with people of diverse ages and cultures. Pleasant telephone etiquette. Ability to work independently. Computer literate. Volunteer must be 16 years of age or older.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Certifications/Tests: None.
Time Required: Average of four hours per week. Prefer a one-year commitment.

 Fitness Room Monitor
Title: Fitness Room Monitor/Greeter
Goal: To meet the RECenter's goal of excellence in customer service and foster an appreciation of recreational opportunities in the local community.
Duties: Greets the fitness room patrons and keeps count of all persons using the room; checks for valid entrance stamp; answers questions on usage regulations; reports equipment needing repair, and can assist with maintaining the room in proper order and cleanliness. Light to heavy lifting
Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. Enthusiastic individual willing to interact with the public in a positive manner. Must be organized and have skills to deal with various tasks.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Time Required: Average of four hours per week. Prefer one year commitment.

 Maintenance Support
Title: Maintenance Support
Goal: To help maintain facilities in order to provide a pleasant, clean and safe environment for RECenter or park users.
Duties: Cares for variety of internal and external areas of the building to include cleaning and maintenance of club and weight rooms, mezzanine and office areas, pool and changing room facilities and overall upkeep of site cleanness and appearance. Assists site custodian with other maintenance duties as required. Light to heavy lifting.
Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. Interest in building maintenance work. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. Prior maintenance work is preferred.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment Training and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Certifications/Tests: None.
Time Required: At least four hours per week, on the same day, for a minimum of six months.

 Class Instructor Assistant
Title: Class Instructor Assistant
Goal: To assist instructors of land classes (those not conducted in RECenter swimming pools) in achieving the goals of the class or program to ensure that students are provided a safe, comfortable and effective learning experience.
Duties: Carries out the directions of the instructor which may include demonstrating the skill being taught to the entire class while the instructor provides feedback to individuals or small groups, or working with one or more students in developing the skill that the instructor is teaching. Helps set up and take down equipment before and after class and helps maintain necessary records. Reports all injuries, accidents, and other problems or concerns to supervisor and completes required forms in a timely manner. Light to moderate lifting.
Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. Demonstrated interest and proficiency in the specific class or program subject through relevant education such as certifications and degrees. Examples include belts in martial arts, titles in dog training, and the like.
Training: Must complete FCPA Safety Training, Sexual Harassment and STARS customer service training within two weeks of start date. Must attend site orientation and on-the job training as required.
Certifications/Tests: Must maintain current certification as required by the specific class. These certifications for assistants may be obtained from the program staff responsible for the class.
Time Required: One class per session.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Barbara Smiley
Cub Run RECenter’s
2014 Outstanding Volunteer
of the Year

Barbara Smiley has always exhibited a "can do" spirit, and is willing to roll up her sleeves and pitch in until the work is completed and the RECenter goal is achieved. Even when the work may be difficult, she does not say "no," but rather "let me see what I can do."

In late 2013, Barbara was working effectively with customers as a front desk volunteer. But when the Cub Run RECenter was left without a marketing/PR volunteer who could assist with soliciting donations, it was suggested to Barbara that help in this area was needed. She did not hesitate, and with very little guidance or direction, Barbara succeeded in obtaining donations from a number of groups (including Walmart, Giant Food, Chipotle, and others) for the 2013 Volunteer Christmas party.

For her ability to promote the RECenter and her continued excellent customer service, we are happy to name Barb Smiley Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for Cub Run RECenter.

THE BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING ...

Free RECenter facility use: Volunteers who maintain an average of four hours of service per week or three weekly classes per class session as an Adapted Aquatics assistant, can use their RECenter’s general facilities free of charge

Community Park Benefits: Currently active Community park volunteers who have consistently maintained an average of four hours of service per week can use EITHER the Free RECenter facility Use of the partnering RECenter, OR their site’s Community Park benefit.

Free RECenter classes: Volunteers who have served a minimum of 32 hours and maintain an average of eight hours of service per week, or volunteer as an Adapted Aquatics assistant for four weekly classes per class session are eligible to take one free FCPA class per session on a space available basis.

Family Discount Pass: All FCPA volunteers are entitled to purchase a 25-visit pass for their family use to any RECenter at a special county employee rate.
