Where to Get Information When Bad Weather Strikes

When bad weather strikes, Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) facilities, classes, open spaces, lakefronts and parks may be impacted. It's important for our customers to know how to find out about cancellations and closures. Information on emergency cancellations and closings is also available on the Park Authority's 24-hour inclement weather information line at 703-324-8661, the county's website, local cable television and the news media.

  • In weather-related emergencies, Park Authority programs, classes and events at park facilities and schools will be canceled based upon the closing decision of Fairfax County Public Schools
  • When a weather emergency occurs on a holiday and/or when schools are closed, the County Office of Public Affairs will give information on Park Authority closings to the news media.
  • Cancellation decisions for the Park Authority rental functions, classes or camps that are provided by contractors at locations other than parks or schools are made separately. For information, participants should call the location where the class or event is being held.  For swim rentals, contact the team renting pool lanes directly.
  • When schools are on winter break, spring break or on teacher workdays, FCPS may make a different announcement relating to closures that address employees working those days or facility openings.  On these days, if the facilities are closed, programs are cancelled; if there is a delayed opening or early closing, programs will follow the schedule as outlined below for school days. If no announcement is made by the schools, call the Park Authority RECenter weather hotline for information.
  • Unless the county closes all county facilities, RECenters will remain open for general use. Call the RECenter directly for their adjusted open swim schedule.
  • If the county closes in the morning but conditions improve and the County Executive decides that some programs can be held as scheduled, a decision should be announced by 2 p.m.  This decision does not affect activities in public schools which would remain cancelled if schools were closed earlier in the day.
