Aquatics Section Internship
The Fairfax County Park Authority aquatic section is looking for an intern to fill a position throughout the year. The organization has nine RECenter aquatic facilities and three outdoor facilities that include a water park, spray park and community pool. We are able to accommodate intern projects related to aquatic programming, operations, and trainings, and in addition would also welcome your suggestions for possible projects. A portion of your time will be spent divided between the various aquatic facilities and the main administrative Park Authority offices, the Herrity Building in Fairfax near Fair Oaks Mall. This is a great opportunity to learn what it takes to run an aquatic facility and also learn about the RECenter and/or park operations in which the pool is located at. Are you looking to split your time between to different areas such as aquatics and fitness or aquatics and risk management? We may be able to help line up two focus areas for your internship.
Some of the identified projects for the internship include:
Developing training materials, videos, photographs, and illustrations
for training materials for the Virginia Swims learn to swim program.
The Virginia Swims program is a comprehensive learn to swim program
for ages 6 months to senior citizen, and includes a wide range of
The program has been developed through collaboration between several aquatic agencies and professionals in the NoVA area. We are currently developing an instructor training program and supporting manuals and resources. An intern could get excellent experience in helping to develop the materials, resources and instructor training program. We are interested in getting interns who are studying education, photography, graphic and/or video production, journalism/writing, or other related field.
- Evaluation of our Water Exercise program – we have been experiencing a decline in participation in the water exercise classes. An intern could help identify possible reasons for the decline, and develop strategies that would address the trend and increase participation. This may involve surveying students (current and previous) and instructors; evaluating current classes and instructors; visiting other agencies to compare their programs to ours; make recommendations on how we could improve participation numbers, and help develop action plans.
- Special projects that support our lifeguard and pool operations.
