About CASH
Fairfax County Creating Assets, Savings and Hope (CASH) is a partnership led by the Fairfax County Office of Partnerships. The program builds on the existing Volunteer Income Tax Assistors (VITA) program. The focus is on helping working families with annual household incomes of less than $40,000 keep and grow their money. Our goal is to improve the financial well-being of working families in Fairfax County through a multi-year campaign. The first year begins with free tax preparation, promoting the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and linking families to existing financial planning and management resources in the community. Partnership goals include:
- increasing incomes through greater use of the EITC;
- minimizing unnecessary financial erosion by offering alternatives to predatory practices and
- maximizing financial assets through effective and existing community resources, such as savings accounts, financial literacy, credit repair, job retention, wage advancements and home ownerships.
Help Families Keep More of What They
Earn
EITC has lifted more people above the poverty line than any other
federal aid program; yet 21 percent-25 percent of those eligible for the
refundable credit fail to take it when completing their tax return forms.
By some calculations the increased family income from the EITC is
equivalent to a $1 per hour pay increase.
How Can I Help?
We are now recruiting volunteers and business
partners to help us meet our goal of getting $2 million back into the
hands of low-income Fairfax County residents. Site directors, preparers,
greeters and tax experts are needed. Our tax prep season runs from late
January to mid April. Businesses can help by encouraging their employees
to claim the EITC and letting them know about our free tax preparation
services.
