FAIRFAX,
Va. Benjamin Franklin, whose face adorns the $100 bill, was the first who uttered the now famous phrase
"In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes." In an ironic twist, millions of income-eligible
Americans qualify for tax refunds through the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), lining their pockets with enough
Franklins for more secure financial futures. But there's a problem; an estimated 14 to 25 percent of those
eligible for the refundable credits actually claim them.
The Fairfax County CASH (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) campaign is the solution.
Free Tax Preparation Starts Jan. 19
CASH is an all-volunteer coalition that provides free income tax preparation services, focusing on the EITC, to
Fairfax County residents with annual household incomes less than $40,000, at 12 sites in northern Virginia.
Sites open Jan. 19, 2008. Hours and days vary by location. A site list, including hours and addresses,
follows. Clients should bring a photo identification and Social Security cards for all taxpayers, spouses and
dependents.

About CASH
Creating Assets, Saving and Hope is a community-based coalition of businesses, government agencies and
community-based organizations supporting an all-volunteer campaign to prepare taxes during the 12-week filing
season from mid-January to mid-April. The coalition has 12 computer sites in Northern Virginia that see
customers one evening per week and on Saturdays.
About EITC
The EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit for low-income individuals and families. When the credit
exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund to those who claim and qualify for the credit.
Thanks to these refunds, the EITC has lifted more people above the poverty line than any other program, but
each year, billions of dollars in EITCs go unclaimed. The goal of CASH is to make sure that eligible families
receive their credits. Last year, CASH helped qualified Fairfax County residents claim $1.2 million in
refunds.
