Project Discovery

Project Discovery encourages students to achieve educational excellence and pursue college educations. These youth, from underserved families, are given tools to excel in their studies and become well-rounded students who are often the first in their families to attend college. The program provides tutoring, life skills workshops, SAT preparation, college visits, cultural enrichment and access to scholarships. Parents are also included in workshops on higher education and other activities. For the last five years, 100 percent of Project Discovery's graduating seniors have enrolled in post-secondary schools. Project Discovery is a partnership among the county, Fairfax County Public Schools, colleges and universities, and area businesses and families. It is partially funded by the Virginia Department of Education.

Discovering College: 2008 Project Discovery Conference Wrap-up

Keynote Speaker Karen P. Tandy
Keynote Speaker Karen P. Tandy addresses students and parents at the 2008 Project Discovery Annual Conference.
More than 100 students and parents attended Project Discovery’s Jan. 12, 2008, Annual Conference. With workshops that addressed the basics of college and others on specific careers, eager future leaders learned the ins and outs of what college is all about.

Project Discovery thanks everybody involved in making the conference such a success, with a special thank you to the keynote speaker, Karen P. Tandy, the former administrator for the Drug Enforcement Administration, whose speech was peppered with personal anecdotes that hit close to home for many of the students, including that Tandy was one of the first in her family to attend college.

One student, an aspiring author, summed up the purpose of the Project Discovery conference: "I already know what I want to do — go to George Mason University and study creative writing. The conference gives me an idea of what's involved in getting there."
