Welcome to the podcast of meeting highlights for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting on January 12, 2010.

 

  • The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors held its first meeting of the year, and Mason District Supervisor Penelope A. Gross was chosen by the board as vice chairman for the second consecutive year. Sharon Bulova enters her second year as chairman. Board meetings will be held on Tuesdays in 2010 and the complete schedule can be found on the county’s Web site.

  • The Board made the following presentations :
    • Westfield High School - The Board of Supervisors recognized the Westfield High School Golf Team for winning the 2009 Virginia AAA State Golf Championship.

    • Shawn Akard - The Board of Supervisors recognized Shawn Akard for receiving the American Horticultural Society 2009 Annual Great American National Award for Youth and Children’s Gardening.|

    • Sydenstricker United Methodist Church - The Board of Supervisors recognized Sydenstricker United Methodist Church for its 100th anniversary.

    • Mentoring Month - The Board of Supervisors designated January 2010 as Mentoring Month in Fairfax County.

    • Year of Appreciation for Older Adults - The Board of Supervisors designated 2010 as the Year of Appreciation for Older Adults in Fairfax County.

    • Verdia Haywood, Ken Garnes and Jimmie Jenkins - The Board of Supervisors recognized Verdia Haywood, Ken Garnes and Jimmie Jenkins for their years of service to Fairfax County.  
      • Haywood, a deputy county executive, led the Fairfax County human services system for more than 30 years.
      • Garnes was the director of the Department of Administration for Human Services. In addition, he served with the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board.
      • Jenkins served more than 33 years in the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, most recently as its director.

  • The Board made the annual appointments of Board Members to various regional and internal boards and committees.

  • The Board completed its annual evaluation of County Executive Anthony H. Griffin and County Attorney David P. Bobzien.

  • Service changes for the Fairfax Connector were approved. Additional trips, adjusted routes and schedules will begin next week.

  • The Board opposed the freeze on the local “ability to pay” composite index update, used to determine the state and local share of education costs. This delay will cost the county millions of dollars.

  • The Board approved a resolution requesting Economic Development Authority-issued bonds for financing the Wiehle Ave. Metrorail Station garage.

  • The Board endorsed the design plan for the Seven Corners Transit Center.

  • The Board scheduled a joint meeting with the Planning Commission on Feb. 2, 2010 at 4:30 p.m. for a briefing on the status of the Tysons plan and demonstration project and affirmed a schedule for the Tysons Plan Amendment.
