Welcome to the podcast of meeting highlights for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting on March 23, 2010.

  • The Board made the following presentations :

    • Sully District Boy Scout Council
      The Board recognized the Sully District Boy Scout Council for collecting more than 44,000 pounds of food in the local area during its annual Scouting for Food program for the benefit of Western Christian Ministries.

    • Laurie and Jack Corkey
      The Board recognized Laurie and Jack Corkey of Reston for their contributions to improve the quality of life in Fairfax County, the 20th anniversary of their Great Harvest Bread Co. stores in Herndon and Vienna and their retirement.

    • Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day
      The Board designated March 30, as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day in Fairfax County for those who served honorably, bravely and faithfully in the Vietnam War. More than 38,000 Vietnam veterans live in Fairfax County and participate in business, the arts, civic affairs and government service.

    • Holocaust Day of Remembrance
      The Board of Supervisors designated April 21, as Holocaust Day of Remembrance in Fairfax County to remember the tragedies of the Holocaust, honor the lives of those living or deceased who were affected and call to mind their courage, forbearance and strength.

    • Public Health Week
      The Board designated April 5-11, as Public Health Week in Fairfax County.

    • Childhood Immunization Month
      The Board designated April as Childhood Immunization Month in Fairfax County.

    • Child Abuse Prevention Month
      The Board designated April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Fairfax County. Fairfax County’s Child Protective Services 24-hour hotline received more than 25,000 calls in fiscal year 2009 seeking help, guidance and referrals to parenting programs and support services.

    • Grace Starbird
      Grace Starbird was recognized for more than 22 years of service to Fairfax County, the last nine as director of the Fairfax Area Agency on Aging. Working with the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Starbird has led the development of a 50+ Action Plan and sponsored Reinventing Your Neighborhood and Reinventing Your Home community learning events.

  • The Board endorsed voluntary guidelines of the regional Council of Government's Greater Washington 2050 Compact.

  • The Board approved the Forest Pest Management program for gypsy moths, fall cankerworms and emerald ash borers.

  • Board accepted $383K in federal stimulus funding to provide employment/training services to displaced workers.

  • The Board directed the County Executive to report back on a possible early retirement option and on the feasibility, advantages and disadvantages of switching to a defined contribution retirement plan, or some sort of hybrid plan, for newly hired Fairfax County Government employees.

  • In light of the expected release of Virginia census data in 2011 by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Board referred reapportionment to the Board's legislative committee to monitor state legislation and related developments that will affect the Board's reapportionment as well as to develop guidelines for Board consideration and a recommended process for engaging the public in this important matter.  Staff was asked to prepared a tentative schedule of reapportionment activities to be presented to the Board in September 2010.
