  • The Board made the following presentations :
    • Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day
      The Board of Supervisors designated May 9-15 as Police Week and May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day in Fairfax County.

    • Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month
      The Board of Supervisors designated May 2010 as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month in Fairfax County.

    • Asian American History Project
      The Board of Supervisors recognized the Asian American History Project for its research and documentation about Asian American groups that have chosen Fairfax County as their home, resulting in the book, “The Fairfax County Asian American History: A Contemporary History Honoring 143 Years of Asian Residents in Fairfax County.”

    • Girl Power Day
      The Board of Supervisors designated May 22 as Girl Power Day in Fairfax County.

    • Lake Braddock Secondary School Band And Director Roy Holder
      The Board of Supervisors recognized the Lake Braddock Secondary School Band for its recent concert and cultural tour of China. Roy Holder, director of the band, was recognized for his election to the American Bandmaster’s Association.

    • Chantilly Youth Association Cheer Select Squad
      The Board of Supervisors recognized the Chantilly Youth Association Cheer Select Squad for winning the U.S. National Competition as well as the Cheer Select Under Team, for being named the Overall Level Winner.

    • Community Action Month
      The Board of Supervisors designated May 2010 as Community Action Month in Fairfax County.

    • Public Works Week
      The Board of Supervisors designated May 16-22 as Public Works Week in Fairfax County. The health, safety and welfare of residents depend upon the facilities and services of the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services.


  • The History Commission presented its annual report.

  • The Advisory Social Services Board presented a report summarizing 2009 trends, events and initiatives for Department of Family Services programs.

  • The Board approved the adaptive reuse plan of the former Lorton reformatory and penitentiary and authorized staff to proceed with phase II of the planning process.

  • The Board approved the two proposed plans affecting federally funded housing programs: the Five-Year Consolidated Plan for FY 2011 - 2015 and the Consolidated One-Year Action Plan for FY 2011. The plans are required for funding four federal housing programs: Community Development Block Grant, HOME Investment Partnerships Program, Emergency Shelter Grant and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS.  

  • The Board approved the development, acquisition and financing agreement and memorandum of understanding with the Mosaic District Community Development Authority at Merrifield.

  • The Board approved the addition of a visual and performing arts section to the County’s Policy Plan.  It expresses support for the display of arts, encourages investment in existing and new arts facilities, supports the provision of a variety of arts venues and addresses mitigation of new and renovated arts facilities on surrounding land uses, environment, transportation and public infrastructure.
