Anyone between the ages of 14-20 interested in a fire service career, may consider joining Fire and Rescue Explorer Post 1949. The post meets the first and third Tuesday each month at the Fire and Rescue Academy, 4600 West Ox Road in Fairfax. Explorers participate in hands-on training activities, joint training with other posts and ride along with career staff to emergency incidents. The Providence RECenter Mother's Day Craft Show is Saturday, April 24, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event features a wide selection of gifts from artists and crafters. Nominations for the annual Environmental Excellence Awards will be accepted until June 1. The awards recognize those who dedicate time, energy and expertise to improve the environment in support of the Board of Supervisors’ environmental goals. Awards are for achievements June 1, 2009, to May 31, 2010, or those that occurred over a period of years, including a portion of the eligibility period. One or more awards may be presented in several categories. The application form and further information are online.
The Sully Senior Center, 5690 Sully Road in Centreville, is hosting an AARP Safe Driver Class, Monday and Wednesday, May 3 and 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers; membership is not required. To register, call 703-322-4475. You must attend both days to complete the course.
There is also a driver improvement program for motorists 55 and over on Saturday, May 1, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Conference Rooms 4-5 of the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. The event is free, however registration is required. Call the Fair Oaks Police Station, 703-591-0966 and press 0 at the menu. Presented by the Police Department, the class covers defensive driving skills and introduces techniques to help offset the effects of aging on driver performance.
Experienced child-care providers are needed for parenting groups. The Department of Family Services Parenting Education Program meets from 5:15 to 8:15 p.m. in Alexandria, Herndon, Reston, Springfield and Falls Church. The children range in age from birth through four. Providers must have experience working with children other than their own. To apply or for more information, call 703-324-7790.
