Welcome to the podcast of meeting highlights for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting on October 18, 2011.
- The Board of Supervisors presented the Government Technology Digital County Survey Award received by Fairfax County to the Department of Information Technology.
The Board made the following presentations:

Recognized Cynthia Almendarez for saving the life of a young child and
the Department of Public Safety Communications presented her with a
Lifesaving Award.

Recognized Fairfax County auxiliary police officers — past and present
— for more than 1 million hours of volunteer time.

Recognized Beth Jewell of West Springfield High School for receiving
the National Marine Education Association 2010 Outstanding Teacher
Award.
-
Recognized the Rotary Club of Bailey’s Crossroads for its contribution
to the success of the third annual Technology Summit held at the James
Lee Community Center.

Designated October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Fairfax
County.
-
Designated October as Head Start Awareness Month in Fairfax
County.
-
Designated Oct. 22 as VolunteerFest Day in Fairfax County.

The Fairfax County Transportation Advisory Commission presented its 2010 Transportation Achievement Award
to Karyn L. Moreland, Chief, Capital Projects Section, Fairfax County
Department of Transportation.

The interim report on
Buildings and Energy Sources from the Private Sector Energy Task
Force was presented.

The Board authorized the Department of Housing and Community
Development and Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board to apply
for and accept funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development Through the Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance Program,
and also authorized the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board
to accept a grant for Community Housing Funds from the Virginia
Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.

The Board agreed to continue administrative item #9 until the next
meeting on Nov. 1, 2011. On Nov. 1, the Board will consider the
authorization of an advertisement of a public hearing to be held at the
December 6, 2011 meeting regarding an amendment to the County Code for
the establishment of an exclusive service area and maximum allowable
rates, fees and charges for water service. This will follow up the
actions taken by the Board on September 27, 2011 when a Fairfax County
Consumer Protection
Commission report, Review of City of
Falls Church Water System: Rates and Capital Improvements was
adopted and two recommendations were endorsed.

The Board endorsed the Virginia Department of Transportation design
plans to replace the structurally deficient bridge on Lee Highway
(Route 29) over Little Rocky Run. The new structure will be built to
accommodate six lanes for future widening of Route 29.

The Board approved comments on the development and funding of
Interstate, Primary, and Urban Highway Systems and Public
Transportation projects for the Virginia Department of Transportation
FY 2013 - FY 2018 Six-Year Improvement Program.

The Board accepted $2.125 million in VDOT funding to administer the
design and construction of bus stop and intersection improvements along
Richmond Highway.
- The Board named Tom Biesiadny director of the Fairfax County Department of Transportation
