The Government Finance Officers Association recently announced that for
the 28th year, Fairfax County has received the association’s
Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. According to the association,
the awards "reflect the commitment of the governing body and staff to
meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.”
Speaking of awards, Fairfax County also received the Governor’s
Technology Award for innovation in local government for its mobile
applications. The award was presented at the annual Commonwealth of
Virginia’s Innovative Technology Symposium last month. Introduced this
year, the county’s iPhone/iPad, Android and BlackBerry mobile
applications – or apps – place government in the palm of your hand
through 24/7 access to government information and services. With the
explosive growth in mobile technology and consumer use of smart devices,
Fairfax County Government is reshaping the public’s experience by
delivering information in a more convenient, accessible platform. This
first version of the app includes a variety of features, along with the
ability to search the entire website for information or navigate through
the county’s mobile website m.fairfaxcounty.gov. More on the
award and the county’s mobile apps can be found at www.fairfaxcounty.gov.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed Oct. 21 as Jeans
Day 2011 in Fairfax County. The Fairfax County Chamber of
Commerce is partnering with the Fairfax-Falls
Church Community Partnership to Prevent and End Homelessness, area
businesses and other Northern Virginia chambers of commerce for a
Northern Virginia wide "Jeans Day 2011." Show your community
spirit and support by sponsoring a Jeans Day in your workplace or
business. On Oct. 21, businesses are encouraged to allow employees to
wear jeans to work to support the 10-Year Plan to Prevent and End
Homelessness and the Partnership to Prevent and End Homelessness. The
cost to an employee to participate is $5. Each participating business
will collect the funds raised and if they choose can match the funds.
Donations will be donated directly to the Partnership to Prevent and End
Homelessness. More information is online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/homeless/.
Congratulations to Master Police Officer Joe Moore, an eight-year
veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department’s Motorcycle Squad, who
recently was awarded the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police
“Traffic Safety Officer of the Year for 2010.” Moore initiated distracted
driving initiatives last year, helping spearhead the Police Department’s
massive year-long education and enforcement effort that included a
hands-on driving demonstration where reporters were invited to drive the
agency’s coned course as officers created a series of distractions,
developing a series of in-house distracted driving enforcement trainings
for his fellow officers, and working with teenagers during Youth Traffic
Safety month.
Finally, there are lots of used book sales this month at Fairfax County
