The Board recognized:

child care
professionals and their work in Fairfax County.

the Fairfax Police Youth Club Girls Rugby Team and the Fort Hunt Boys
Rugby Team for winning the Virginia High School State Championships and
the Fort Hunt Girls Rugby Team for advancing to the championship
games.

Olivia Toatley, principal of Hunters Woods Elementary School for the
Arts and Sciences, Reston, and Gregory Croghan, principal of Edison
High School, Alexandria, who will retire.

the Langley High School Girls Tennis Team for its undefeated season and
winning the 2012 Virginia State Championship.
The Board designated:

September as Direct Support Professionals Appreciation Month in Fairfax
County.

The Equestrian Task Force presented a report to the
Board.
-
The Small Business Commission presented its annual report.

County Executive Edward L. Long Jr. presented a report on the county’s
response and recovery for the severe thunderstorm (derecho) that
hit Fairfax County on Friday, June 29. The County’s Emergency
Operations Center (EOC) was activated, a local emergency was declared
and activities were coordinated with public safety, the 9-1-1 Center
and many other county staff to determine and address needs, communicate
important information and support the overall response. There are
always ways to improve emergency response and the Office of Emergency
Management will conduct a formal after-incident review, bringing in
County agencies, partner agencies and external partners to review
actions taken and plan for future events.

The Board adopted a resolution approving the issuance by the Fairfax
County Industrial Development Authority of its health care revenue
bonds.

The Board adopted a resolution approving the issuance by the Fairfax
County Economic Development Authority of its revenue bonds for the
benefit of the Potomac School.

The Board approved the third four-year transportation program (FY 2013
- FY2016).

The Board adopted a resolution confirming the declaration of local
emergency for the severe thunderstorm (derecho) that hit Fairfax County
on Friday, June 29, approving actions taken by the director of
emergency management (the county CEX) and county staff during that
emergency, and confirming the termination of that declared local
emergency on July 6, 2012.

The Board appointed
Leslie B. Johnson as the county’s zoning administrator. She will
assume her new position on Sept. 8.
