The Board recognized:

the Forestville Elementary School Odyssey of the Mind Team for winning
the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award at the Odyssey of the Mind World
Finals Competition held at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, from May
23-26.

the Senior Dance Company from Buffa’s Dance Studio in Burke for
numerous achievements at the Contest of Champions held at the ESPN Wide
World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fl., on February 25, including the
title of Grand National Champions.

Stephen J. De Benedittis of Herndon for his years of service as the
mayor of the Town of Herndon.
The Board designated:

June 17-23 as Fire and EMS Safety, Health and Survival Week in Fairfax
County.

June 23 as Hepatitis Awareness Day in Fairfax County.

June 25-30 as Mosquito Control
Awareness Week in Fairfax County.
The Board presented the A. Heath Onthank Awards,
the highest honor Fairfax County bestows on its employees. The awardees
were Richard Cabellos, park/recreation specialist; Judy Flaig, elections
management analyst and Stephen Sinclair, senior utilities analyst.

The Volunteer Fire Commission presented its annual report.

The Board approved an updated agreement between Fairfax County and the
Virginia Department of Transportation to accept congestion mitigation
and air quality and regional surface transportation program funding for
the Route 50 pedestrian initiative.

The Board approved the 2012 zoning ordinance amendment work program,
which contains requests for amendments to the Zoning Ordinance
generated from the Board, the Planning Commission, the Board of Zoning
Appeals, staff, members of the public and industry
representatives. The program was amended to include a review of
the number of children who can be cared for in a home child care
facility to be consistent with the currently authorized state maximum
of 12 children (the existing maximum under the zoning ordinance is 10
children).

The Board authorized the renewal of a joint funding agreement between
the County and the United States Geological Survey for the continuation
of a water resources monitoring network.

The Board approved agreements between the Town of Herndon and Fairfax
County to construct pond retrofits at the Herndon Centennial Park Golf
Course and at the Herndon Public Works Maintenance Facility.

The Board approved a construction and funding agreement with the
Virginia Department of Transportation as part of the Safe Routes to
School Grant Program to support preliminary engineering and
construction costs for installation of a pedestrian refuge island at
the intersection of Burke Center Parkway and Marshall Pond Road in the
vicinity of Terra Centre Elementary School.

The Board approved regional comments objecting to the Virginia
Department of Rail and Public Transportation’s change in the way the
Commonwealth will direct distribution of its financial
assistance for transit to Northern Virginia localities.
