The Board made presentations to community groups and individuals.
The Board recognized:

The Chantilly High School Boys Cross Country Team for winning the 2012
Virginia championship and Sean McGorty for being the individual state
champion and being selected as the Gatorade Virginia Boys Cross Country
Runner of the Year.

The Lake Braddock Secondary School Girls Cross Country Team as the
state champion and Sophie Chase for being selected as the Gatorade
Virginia Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.
-
The Fairfax County Police Department Helicopter Unit,
K-9 Nero and his handler, Lt. Shawn Martin, for their lifesaving
efforts.
-
Robert E. Simon Jr, the Reston Association and its community partners
for their vision and community leadership, resulting in the selection
of Reston as the “Seventh Best Community in the United States” in
2012.
-
The Initiative for Public Art — Reston and the Reston Historic Trust
and Museum for their vision and efforts to celebrate the story of
community through art.
-
Dr. Karen Diviney for her years of service to Fairfax County.
-
Stephanie Abbott for her years of service on the Fairfax County Public
Library
Board.
-
Dominion Virginia Power for its donation of land to Fairfax County to
enable safe, accessible pedestrian access to the Spring Hill RECenter
and Spring Hill School.

The Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce for its 30th anniversary.
The Board designated:

February as African American History Month in Fairfax County.
-
The Employees Advisory Council presented the 2013 Don Smith Award to
Dominic Runfola, Fire and Rescue Department, and honorable mentions to
Amy Gaisor, Sheriff’s Office, and Mark Kidd, Police Department.

The Board heard a report on General Assembly activities.
-
The Board authorized the advertisement of a public hearing on a
proposed agreement with the Commissioner of Highways of the
Commonwealth of Virginia re: sign removal in the public
rights-of-way.
-
The Board authorized the advertisement of a public hearing to establish
the Bonnie Brae community parking district in the Braddock
District.
-
The Board authorized the advertisement of a proposed zoning ordinance
amendment re: home child care facilities.
-
The Board approved revisions to Chapters 4, 16 and 17 of the personnel
regulations clarifying conflict of interest restrictions, aligning
standards of conduct with Virginia Code, and aligning grievance
submission schedules with Virginia Code.
-
The Board endorsed the FY 2014 VDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Grant
Applications, with the exception of item #3, phase III of the
Georgetown Pike Walkway Project.

The Board approved transfer of ownership and maintenance of 32 bus
shelters located in Fairfax County from VDOT to the Fairfax County
Department of Transportation.

The Board authorized a letter of agreement with WMATA that will
facilitate the North Kings Highway median improvement project.
-
The Board approved comments for submission to the FCC concerning
text-to-911 and other next generation 911 applications.

The Board authorized the VA Department of Motor Vehicles to issue a Fairfax County
license plate.

The Board noted that the mid-county human services center and I-66
transfer station operations center received awards of excellence from
the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties.
- The Board conducted the annual meeting of the Fairfax County Solid Waste Authority.
