Welcome to the podcast of meeting highlights for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting on January 8, 2013.
This was the first meeting of the year for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and Mason District
Supervisor Penelope A. Gross was chosen by the board as vice chairman for
the fifth consecutive year. Sharon Bulova enters her fifth year as
chairman.

The United Way of the National Capital Area presented a check to the
Board representing the amount that was contributed through the
Fairfax-Falls Church Community Impact Fund in 2012.

Representatives of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department
presented a check to the American Cancer Society for funds raised to
support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
- The Board made presentations to community groups and individuals.
The Board recognized:

International Association of Firefighters Local 2068 for its
successful Labor Day 2012 Fill the Boot Campaign.

Gail Kinsey, principal of Fairfax Villa Elementary School in
Fairfax for being named Virginia’s 2012 National Distinguished
Principal by the National Association of Elementary School
Principals.

Janet Coldsmith for nearly 35 years of service to Fairfax
County.

International Association of Firefighters Local 2068 for its
successful Labor Day 2012 Fill the Boot Campaign.
The Board designated:

January as Stalking Awareness Month in Fairfax County.

January as Mentoring Month in
Fairfax County.

January 25 as Earned
Income Tax Credit Awareness Day in Fairfax County.

January as Stalking Awareness Month in Fairfax County.

Board members were appointed to various regional and internal boards
and committees.

The Board approved a meeting schedule for calendar year 2013 and
authorized the Chairman to postpone a scheduled meeting in the event of
weather or other hazardous conditions.

The Board approved a memorandum of understanding between the Fairfax
County Police Department, the United States Attorney for the District
of Columbia and the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C.
regarding the 2013 Presidential Inauguration.

The Board approved the Fairfax County Domestic Violence Prevention,
Policy, and Coordinating Council’s Charter and Bylaws.

The Board announced service adjustments for Fairfax Connector Bus
Service effective this month.

The Board appointed
Mark Moffatt as the director of the Department of
Vehicle Services (DVS).

The Board created a Tysons
Transportation Service District as well as a Tysons Transportation
Service District Advisory Board, and established the “Tysons-Wide” and
“Tysons Grid of Streets” transportation funds, adopted their respective
guidelines, and an annual rate adjustment for the existing Tysons
transportation fund. The Board will set the service district tax
rate when they approve the budget in April and the first district taxes
will be collected in January, 2014.
