Welcome to the podcast of meeting highlights for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting on July 9, 2013.

The Board made presentations to community groups and individuals.

The Board recognized:

  • Jorge Arias for his years of service to Fairfax County.

  • Rohil Bhinge for his fundraising efforts for Chessie’s BIG Backyard.

  • the Shark Tank Racing Squad and Patty Friedman for their service to the community and Fairfax County.

  • West Springfield High School drama students and their coach, Bernie DeLeo, for winning the 2012-2013 Virginia High School League one-act play championship.

  • Tim Thomas, principal of Westfield High School, for his contributions to Fairfax County Public Schools and being chosen as a principal of the year by The Washington Post.

  • Helene Safford of Longfellow Middle School for being name 2012 Middle School Teacher of the Year by the Southern Business Education Association.

  • Robert Carlisle for 35 years of service in law enforcement, most recently as the chief of police for the Town of Vienna.

The Board designated:

  • September as Direct Support Professionals Appreciation Month in Fairfax County.

  • The Board authorized a public hearing on an interim development agreement with Lake Anne Development Partners, LLC for the redevelopment of the Crescent property in Reston as part of the revitalization of Lake Anne. The Crescent, which features 181 garden style multi-family affordable units on 16.5 acres, is owned by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and managed by the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority.  The July 30 public hearing, to be held at 4:30 pm in the Board Auditorium of the Fairfax County Government Center, will allow the public to comment on the interim development agreement. The final decision to move forward with the interim development agreement will not go before the Board of Supervisors until its meeting on September 10, 2013.

  • The Board approved the 2013 Zoning Ordinance Amendment Work Program.

  • A parking reduction was approved for the proposed residential component of the mixed-use development at The Grande at Huntington in the Mt. Vernon district.

  • Changes to the Fairfax County Purchasing Resolution were approved, which incorporate a modification resulting from legislation enacted during the 2013 session of the Virginia General Assembly and two administrative changes. 

  • The Board approved transportation funding changes in the Dranesville District, reallocating funding previously allocated to a spot intersection improvement project at Old Dominion Drive and Towlston Road to three other projects:

    • Old Dominion Drive and Linway Terrace intersection improvement

    • Old Dominion Drive and Bell View Road intersection improvement

    • Idylwood Road pedestrian improvements.

  • The Board approved recommendations by the Consolidated Community Funding Advisory Committee for the FY 2015 and FY 2016 funding priorities for the Consolidated Community Funding Pool.

  • The Board adopted the Fairfax Forward Planning Process and associated pilot Comprehensive Plan Amendment Work Program.
