Welcome to the podcast of meeting highlights for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting on October 8, 2013.

The Board received a presentation by Fairfax2015 on the World Police and Fire Games to be held in Fairfax County, June 26-July 5, 2015.

The Board made presentations to community groups and individuals.


The Board designated:

  • October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Fairfax County.

  • November as Adoption Awareness Month in Fairfax County.

The Board recognized:

  • The McLean Little League Majors Softball All-Star Team for advancing to the World Series finals.

  • The Fairfax County Human Services Council for its 25th anniversary.

  • Shiloh Baptist Church for its 140th anniversary.

  • The Fairfax County Computer Clubhouses for receiving Kudos Awards from the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network.

  • Glendy Bowman, chair of the Fairfax County Head Start Policy Council, for being awarded a scholarship from the Virginia Association of Head Start.

  • In recognition for her many years of community and exemplary volunteer work in Fairfax County, Viveka Fuenzalida was honored by the Board with the 2013 Barbara Varon Volunteer Award.  This award is given annually to a Fairfax County resident whose dedication to improving the community through volunteer service honors the memory of Barbara Varon, former Chairman of the Fairfax County Electoral Board. 

  • The Board approved acceptance of $13,078,245 representing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) FY 2013 Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) subgrant awards.  DHS provides financial assistance to address the unique planning, training, equipment, and exercise needs of high-threat, high-density urban areas to assist them in building an enhanced and sustainable capacity to prevent, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism. These funds will be used by various County agencies to enhance security and overall preparedness.

  • The Board approved an agreement between the Fairfax County Police Department and the Virginia State Police (VSP) for the NOVA / DC Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce. This authorizes VSP to compensate the County to offset the ICAC related costs of one full-time sworn investigator over the 2013/2014 fiscal period.

  • Board approved a Memorandum of Understanding between the Fairfax County Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding the Child Exploitation Task Force.  The MOU delineates the responsibilities within the task force to maximize interagency cooperation and formalize the relationships between the member agencies. The agreement also authorizes financial reimbursement from the FBI to the Fairfax County Police Department in the form of overtime paid for the use of Department personnel.

  • The Board approved a financing plan for the renovation of the Lincolnia Center through the Virginia Resources Authority’s Virginia Pooled Financing Program.  The Lincolnia Center, located in the Mason District, accommodates three separate operations: Senior Housing and Assisted Living, a Senior Center and an Adult Day Health Care Center.

  • The Board approved comments on projects and programs to be included in the Virginia Department of Transportation Fiscal Year 2015-2020 Six-Year Improvement Program, emphasizing its concerns regarding the proposed allocations to interstate, primary, and urban highway systems and public transportation projects, facilities, and services.
