Harry Glasgow, chair of the Tree Commission, presented the commission's annual report.
The Board noted that for three days, Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) will host a range of events and forums to explore human-caused climate change and what it means for society. The NOVA Climate Change Symposium will take place Jan. 30 through Feb.1 on NOVA campuses.
At the meeting, the Fairfax County Employees Advisory Council (EAC) presented the 2007 Don Smith EAC Award to two county employees. The award recognizes individual county employees who have contributed in an outstanding manner to the well-being of fellow employees. The 2007 Don Smith EAC Award winners are: Paul Carlin, Fire and Rescue Department and Lt. Timothy Hoover, Police Department. In addition, two employees received honorable mention awards: Jeffrey Davidson, Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC) and Maj. Edwin Roessler Jr., Police Department.
The final quarterly status report on the Board's first Four-Year Transportation program for FY 2005 through FY2008 was reviewed. Beginning with the March 2008 quarterly report, staff will be reporting on the projects and initiatives in the Board's second Four-Year Program for 2008-2011.
The Fairfax County Solid Waste Authority held its annual meeting, appointed officers, approved the minutes from their last meeting and approved the financial statements.
A letter to Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Administrator James S. Simpson was approved by the Board exhorting the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the FTA to take a detailed appraisal of Governor Timothy M. Kaine’s response to indications that the FTA was likely to declare the Rail to Dulles Project unfit for federal funding. “We trust,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald E. Connolly in the letter on behalf of the board, “that you will reach the same conclusion as we have – that the expansion of the Metrorail system to Dulles merits, and needs, the funding support of the federal government.”
