Board of Supervisors Meeting Podcast Transcript: March 10, 2008

Fairfax County Podcasts

Welcome to the podcast of meeting highlights for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting on March 10, 2008

Linda Wimpey, chairman of the Community Council on Homelessness, presented its annual message to the Board.

Marcus Simon, chairman of the Advisory Social Services Board, presented its annual report to the Board.

Both of these reports are available online on the county’s Web site.

The Board authorized the advertisement of the FY 2009 county budget and the tax rate proposed to support it.  The advertised tax rate will be $0.92, which is an increase of three cents in order to give the Board the opportunity to react to the ever-changing and worsening economic outlook for the nation and the region.  It should be noted that the typical homeowner would still pay less in taxes in FY 2009 even if a three cents tax rate increase is approved.  But advertising this increase in the rate does not prevent the Board from lowering any advertised tax rate when they adopt the budget on April 28, 2008.  Budget information is online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/news/budget/.

The Board approved the amendments to the Fairfax County Code to allow large area Community Parking Districts (CPDs) without a petition process.  Before this action, the Code required a neighborhood petition process before the Board could address the community need for parking restrictions.  Now, an entire magisterial district can be designated as a CPD; the parking restrictions would apply only to public streets in residential areas within the district boundaries and would provide for limited exclusions from the CPD for areas that meet cwertain minimum size criteria.  After the Code change was approved, the Board established the Mount Vernon Community Parking District, designating the entire Mount Vernon magisterial district as a CPD.
