Welcome to the podcast of meeting highlights for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting on November 16, 2009.
The Board made the following presentations:
International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2068
for its dedication during the Labor Day 2009 Fill the Boot Campaign. Firefighters and paramedics raised nearly $453,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Chantilly American Little League Major All Stars Team
for its accomplishments. The team’s discipline and good sportsmanship resulted in winning the Little League District 10 Championship, the Virginia State Championship and advancement to the championship game of the Southeastern Regional Tournament.
Digital Television Conversion Volunteers
for assistance in installing TV conversion equipment for older adults and adults with disabilities during the nationwide change to digital format. Volunteers installed TV conversion equipment in nearly 200 homes.
Self-Help and Resource Exchange, Inc.
for its 40th anniversary. SHARE was established in 1969 by a coalition of religious and civic organizations to meet emergency needs of residents in McLean, Great Falls, Pimmit Hills and surrounding areas.
Herndon Fortnightly Club
for its 120th anniversary. Established in 1889, the club opened a library to the public in a rented room. Fundraising efforts resulted in the construction of a library building in 1927, and through a relationship established with Fairfax County in 1939 the new Fortnightly Library opened in 1995. The members of the Fortnightly Club continue to support the library and its staff with volunteers, gifts and donations.
Community Services Board
for its 40th anniversary. The CSB was established in 1969 to partner with individuals, families and the community to empower and support residents with or at risk of developmental delay, intellectual disabilities, mental illness or substance abuse. Services are currently provided to 18,000 individuals and families annually.
AIDS Awareness Day
Dec. 1, 2009 is AIDS Awareness Day in Fairfax County. The World AIDS Day slogan, “ Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise,” is a call to governments, policymakers and regional health authorities to ensure greater access for all to AIDS/HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.

The Board members attended an announcement by the Governor that Fairfax
County landed a pioneering nonprofit medical research institute that
will create 415 jobs.
The Board approved an agreement w/ Virginia Railway Express for
environmental work, preliminary engineering and final design of a
second platform at Lorton station.
A public hearing on new rules for commercial vehicles parking in
residential districts was scheduled for Dec. 7, at 4:30 p.m.
The Board approved an application for $846K in USAID funding for Fire
Department search/rescue efforts around the world.
The Board accepted $13.7 million in grants for local/regional police,
fire, emergency management, and interoperable communications
The Board accepted $2.6 million state grant to continue the Virginia
Preschool Initiative for at-risk 4-year olds.
The Board accepted a $936K federal/state grant for H1N1 flu vaccine
The Environmental Quality Advisory Council presented its annual
At the last meeting, the Board approved a public hearing for December
7, 2009 on the proposal to create the Phase II Dulles Rail
Transportation Improvement District. The Board had also amended
the year's meeting schedule to add a meeting on December 15, 2009 at
2:30 p.m. for a decision on whether to adopt a proposed resolution to
create the Phase II District. Today, the Board canceled that Dec.
15 meeting and in its place scheduled a meeting of the Board for 11
a.m. on Monday, December 21, 2009 to consider final adoption of a
resolution to create a proposed Phase II Dulles Rail District.
The Board granted additional paid holidays in 2009 to county staff,
approving an additional half-day on December 24, making it a full-day
holiday, and granting a full day holiday on Thursday, December 31,
The Board appointed James W. Patteson, PE, as director of theDepartment of Public Works
and Environmental Services (DPWES). Patteson will
begin his new position on Monday, Dec. 7.
- The record was left open for comments on the Proposed Legislative Program; the Board will adopt the program at the meeting on December 7 and have a legislative work session with the county’s delegation to the 2010 Virginia General Assembly on Dec. 9.
