Good day, I’m Terry Rounds, and welcome to the Fairfax County News to Use podcast of Oct. 16, 2007. Coming up, learn about the Ghost Train at Burke Lake Park; America Recycles Day; the new Fairfax County Web site; and invasive plants. Links to topics mentioned in this podcast can be found online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/news.
The Ghost Train returns to Burke Lake Park on Saturdays, October 20th and 27th, and Sundays, October 21st and 28th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $4 person, free for 2 and under. Burke Lake Park is located at 7315 Ox Road in Fairfax Station. For more information, you may call Burke Lake Park at 703-323 6601.
America Recycles Day is set for Saturday, November 10th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Herndon High School. This year, the following materials will be accepted for recycling: computers, cell phones, eye glasses, gently worn shoes, clean and working microwaves, rechargeable batteries and personal documents for shredding. A $10 fee will be collected for computer monitors. For more information, visit the News to Use Web page or call 703-324-5230.
The Fairfax County Web site is being redesigned with a new look and feel. Please visit the county home page at www.fairfaxcounty.gov to view the draft site and then take a quick survey to share your thoughts.
And finally, Fall is in the air. The changing leaves can dazzle the eye and heighten the senses. As you prepare for Fall clean up, look around your yard for invasive plants. Some of the more common invasive plants are English Ivy, Burning Bush and Japanese Barberry. Many invasive plants are also preventing us from enjoying our forests and are degrading our natural ecosystems, so it’s important to remove them when spotted. For more information on invasive species call the Park Authority Naturalist Line at 703-324-8580. Or for a list of native Virginia plants, you may call Green Spring Farm at 703-642-5173
