- Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Donations of new or gently used winter coats are tax deductible and receipts are available.
It’s the holiday season and there are many events and programs in your community this month. Celebrate the season at county parks or libraries; adopt a pet with expanded animal adoption hours; and enjoy ice skating. In the spirit of the season, don't miss Mt. Vernon RECenter's annual Holiday Ice Skating Show on Saturday, December 15th from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This free, two-hour program will feature a wide range of students, from the three-year old beginners to the advanced solo skaters. Mt. Vernon RECenter is located at 2017 Belle View Boulevard in Alexandria. Call 703-768-3224 and ask for the ice director for more information. For details on all holiday events in the county, visit the News to Use Web page.
The presidential primaries are Feb. 12 in Virginia and residents who are not already registered to vote must do so by Jan. 14. Voters in Virginia do not register by political party and they must select whether they wish to vote the Democratic or the Republican ballot.
Any eligible county resident who will be 18 by or on Tuesday, November 4th, 2008, may register and vote in the February primary. For more information, visit the News to Use Web page or call 703-324-4735.
And finally, if it snows this winter, know who plows the streets. The Virginia Department of Transportation is responsible for removing snow and ice from the thousands of miles of public roads in Fairfax County. Clearing is done on a priority basis, with interstates and high volume roads cleared first. Once the most heavily traveled roads and emergency routes are adequately clear, snow crews move to less-traveled roads and subdivisions. Some subdivisions are cleared by private contractors. Please contact VDOT at 703-383-8368 for further information about its snow removal operations.
