The first thing to do, after searching
your own neighborhood, is to stop by your local animal
shelter to report the lost pet, view the strays at the
shelter and check through found reports. You can visit
the shelter as often as you wish but should stop in at
least every couple of days to make sure the animal has
not been brought in. Descriptions of the same animal can
vary from one person to the next, so don't rely on a phone
call to identify your pet. You may also report your lost cat
or your lost dog to the Fairfax
County Animal Shelter through these forms. You may also view
pets brought to your local Animal Shelter. The Fairfax County Animal Shelter has
additional information to assist you in locating your
pet. Remember, the more effort you make, the greater the
chance of finding your pet.
The most important thing to do is to
prevent your pet from becoming lost. Keep your cats indoors
at all times with a safety collar and ID tags and dogs
on a leash when not inside the home, also properly identified.
Tattooing and microchips are also available to help ensure
your pet's safe return home.
