Protect Your Property

There are many items stolen from your vehicles and homes. Learn what you can do to keep your property out of the hands of thieves. You can also download these tips in a presentation.

  • DVDs 
  • Coins
  • Anything of value (to the criminal)

What is Suspicious? 

  • Noises: Glass breaking, verbal altercation, tires screeching
  • Events: Occupied parked vehicle, person peering in home/car windows, flashlight in dark home, inappropriate video recording
  • Persons: Solicitors, persons congregating in woods at strange times, short term pedestrian or vehicular traffic

Safeguarding Your Vehicles

  • Remove ALL valuables from vehicle (Do not hide them in your car)
  • Keep your doors locked at ALL times (even when parking in your garage)
  • Remove the suction cup ring from your window (clean)
  • Do not leave engine running
  • Remove personal info from car (identity theft)
  • Keep area well lit (bulb maintenance)
  • Keep car clean and neat (boring), Remove clothes, DVDs, loose change, jewelry, trash, bags, briefcases, etc. spare keys, Garage door openers.

Protect Your Home

  • Keep your property clean and neat
  • Make landscaping adjustments
  • Keep grounds well lit (burglars don’t like to be lit up)
  • Locks on doors and windows are only good if they are used Record make, model and serial numbers of all your valuable items
  • Keep this information in a safe and readily available location
  • If your dog is barking, investigate home and property!
  • Keep your garage door closed and the door to your home locked!
  • Keep windows locked
  • Join your Neighborhood Watch program (community awareness at all times)

Reporting Crime to Police

Call 9-1-1 first, for in-progress calls!

Suspicious Persons and Events

  • Don’t dismiss activity as unimportant
  • Be patient with call taker and remain calm
  • Describe who and what you see accurately
  • Note direction of travel, if suspect flees area
  • Do not touch evidence if suspect flees
  • Do NOT confront suspect verbally or physically

Preparation for Police Report

  • Record make, model and serial numbers of all your valuable items
  • Keep this information in a safe and readily available location
