Embezzlement is stealing and stealing is a crime, specifically, a form of larceny.

If you suspect an employee is stealing from the cash register, or somehow re-directing funds for personal gain, contact Criminal Investigative Section at your district police station of call the FCPD Financial Crimes Section at 703-246-7800.

How do you recognize embezzlement?

 If you suspect an individual of embezzlement, you may notice:

  • Financial problems or unexplained new-found wealth
  • Decline in job performance
  • Personality changes/mood swings
  • Deviation from policy/procedure
  • Outside business interests
  • Change in vacationing pattern; too many or unscheduled

 If you suspect an organization of embezzlement, you may notice:

  • Poor internal controls
  • Unbalanced accounts
  • Missing or disorganized documents
  • Unexplained discrepancies

Do you suspect your company has been embezzled?

  • Hire an outside agency to perform an audit
  • Make sure your company keeps accurate, up-to-date records
  • Contact the FCPD Financial Crimes Section at 703-246-7800 to investigate
