NATIONAL NIGHT OUT 2007 - America’s Night Out Against Crime
On Tuesday,
August 7, neighborhoods throughout Fairfax County joined forces with
thousands of communities nationwide for the “24th Annual National Night
Out” (NNO) crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, sponsored
by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally
by the Fairfax County Police Department, involved more than 10,000
communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and
military bases around the world. NNO 2007 was supported in part by the
Target Corporation and the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice
Assistance.
National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts;
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
- Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
From 3 p.m. to 5
p.m. Fairfax County hosted its first annual countywide kick-off event for
National Night Out at Camelot Elementary School at 8100 Guinevere Drive,
Annandale, Virginia 22003. Police Chief, Colonel David M. Rohrer
(pictured right), as well as officers from every rank and district
station, spread throughout the county to join neighborhoods in
festivities celebrating the night. Residents turned on outside lights and
spent time outside with neighbors and police. Many communities hosted a
variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades,
flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anti-crime rallies.
From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. residents in neighborhoods throughout Fairfax County and across the nation locked their doors, turned on outside lights and spent time outside with neighbors and police. Many neighborhoods throughout Fairfax County hosted a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anti-crime rallies.
