DWI-related Deaths Down; Arrests Up in
FairfaxCounty
Four people have lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes so far this year, compared to 13 for the same period in Fairfax County. As of August 20, officers have arrested 1,975 people for driving while intoxicated. This compares to 1,578 for the same period in 2007.
In conjunction with the 2008 Checkpoint Strikeforce Campaign, Fairfax County Police officers will be joined by Virginia State Troopers from Division VII, in conducting a sobriety checkpoint to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers on Friday, August 22 from 11 p.m. until 2 a.m. Saturday in the Franconia Police District. Checkpoint Strikeforce is a statewide initiative combining enforcement and education effort geared towards raising public awareness of drunk driving.
All motorists will be stopped and drivers will be checked to assure that their abilities to drive have not been impaired by alcohol or drugs.
The Fairfax County Police Department takes the issue of drinking and driving seriously. This effort combined with ongoing DWI enforcement initiatives throughout the county are designed to prevent alcohol related crashes and make the roadways safer.
