Search for Missing Officer Update
The ground, air and water search for the Fairfax County police officer missing in Pohick Bay since Tuesday is transitioning today from search and rescue to search and recovery. Second Lieutenant Frank Stecco was a volunteer role player in a helicopter water rescue exercise at Pohick Bay Regional Park when he disappeared at 2:47 p.m. on October 21. Extensive efforts and resources have concentrated on search and rescue since Tuesday afternoon.
Based upon the passage of time, the searches completed, and analysis of the incident and conditions, Colonel David M. Rohrer, Chief of Police, has authorized the transition to a full search and recovery operation beginning this evening. The many local, regional, and federal partners that have been supporting the search since Tuesday have committed to continue that support for the extended time required.
One addition to the search capabilities are dogs specially trained in detecting human scent on the water. These specialized teams of dogs and handlers have joined the marine resources today.
Effective today the Coast Guard has established a federal safety zone that will prohibit recreational boating in all of Pohick Bay, Gunston Cove and the area of the Potomac River near the cove. Commercial boaters will be allowed in those areas, but only with the understanding they may need to slow down to avoid divers and small boats participating in the search and recovery efforts. The safety zone designation is good for seven days and will be enforced by the Coast Guard.

2Lt. Frank Stecco
