Police Academy Hosts Criminal Justice Field Day

More than 90 Fairfax County criminal justice academy public school students are set to compete in a series of exercises that will demonstrate their capabilities and readiness for future careers in law enforcement.

The event will be Monday, May 5 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy, 14601 Lee Road, in Chantilly. This is the second year of the joint Police/Schools/Sheriff’s Office effort. The day is designed to be a fun way to round out the year for the dedicated high school students who have chosen to learn more about the field of law enforcement. These students are considering potential careers in law enforcement, law, or are interested in learning more about the many opportunities provided by these professions.

On the morning of May 5, students will observe a series of demonstrations, including the TAC team, helicopter operations, and K-9. Both the police department and Sheriff’s office will also display a variety of state-of-the-art communications vehicles, equipment and technologies. Students from Centreville and Westfield High Schools, Chantilly, Falls Church and Marshall Academies, and Robinson Secondary Schools will participate.

Students will show off their physical fitness by completing a “unique” obstacle course, highlighting their abilities to drag dummies and climb walls. They’ll be judged on their crime scene techniques by processing a mock crime scene. Additionally, teams of two will be evaluated on their ability to accurately describe and develop a composite sketch of a suspect.
