Seven Teams Graduate from K9 School
Seven new K9 teams will graduate from their rigorous 14-week basic training course on Friday, January 16 at 10 a.m. The ceremony, to include a series of canine-handler demonstrations, will take place at the Fairfax County Police Canine Training Facility at 3721 Stonecroft Boulevard in Chantilly.
The basic training course for K9s includes sessions on patrol techniques and narcotics detection. The teams are trained in tracking and locating criminal suspects, as well as endangered missing persons. Additionally, the teams have learned how to locate lost articles, conduct building searches as well as open air searches. Similar to athletes, the dogs trained in agility, physical fitness and are fed healthy diets without table scraps.
In addition to physical stamina and endurance, the bond between handler and dog is critical, according to Canine Unit supervisors, and the past 14 weeks have strengthened and solidified that bond.
The Fairfax County Canine Unit is proud to announce that the following teams will graduate:
- MPO Mark Dale & K9 Blitz, Fairfax County Police Department
- PFC Lori Beach & K9 Elvis, Fairfax County Police Department
- PFC Robin Wyatt & K9 Gallo, Fairfax County Police Department
- Deputy Brad Pugh & K9 Ammo, Warren County Sheriff’s Office
- Officer Cheryl Nordstrom & K9 Drago, Arlington County Police Department
- Officer Damien Austin & K9 Smokey, Town of Herndon Police Department
- Officer Janie Moreno & K9 Thor, City of Falls Church Police Department
