Attempted Burglary in Reston
Police are investigating an attempted burglary that occurred on Wednesday, January 14 in the 1800 block of Sycamore Valley Drive in Reston. Around 6 a.m. a 29-year-old woman was leaving her apartment when she was surprised by a man at her door. The suspect brandished a gun and tried to force his way into her apartment. The victim fought back and was able to shut her door, locking the suspect outside. The victim did not require medical treatment.
The suspect was described as black, about 6 feet tall and 190 pounds with a thin build. He was wearing athletic-type, dark pants, a gray jacket and a black ski cap that covered his face.
The following safety tips are provided:
- Report any and all suspicious activity by calling the non-emergency police-dispatch number at 703-691-2131. Use 911 in the case of an emergency.
- Keep doors and windows locked at all times, even when you are home.
- Remember you do NOT have to open your door to speak with someone; always ask for identification if they are a stranger.
- Make sure to carry your cell phone with you and have it charged in case you need to use it in an emergency.
- Trust your instincts, if something doesn’t feel right it probably isn’t
- Be aware of your surroundings.
This man may have been seen in the area of the complex prior to this incident and investigators would like to speak with anyone who may have seen him.
