DNA Evidence Solves Sexual Assault Case from 2006
A DNA match led to the arrest of a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl in 2006. On Sunday, November 5, 2006, the Alexandria teenager was walking in the area of Lawrence Street and Gramercy Circle around 5 a.m. when she noticed a man following her. The victim tried to get away but the suspect grabbed her, sexually assaulted her and left the scene. Police conducted a thorough investigation and distributed a sketch of the suspect, but the case went unsolved.
On January 23 of this year, police arrested a man involved in an unrelated case and DNA evidence obtained from the arrest linked him to the earlier assault. Further investigation led to the arrest of James S. Williams, 47, of 2218 Rollins Drive in Alexandria. Officers from the Mount Vernon Neighborhood Patrol Unit took Williams into custody on Wednesday, February 11 and transported him to the Adult Detention Center. He was charged with forcible sodomy, rape and abduction.
