News Release: National Crime Victims Rights Week/SPR
April 24, 2009

Candlelight Vigil of Courage, Hope and Remembrance
"25 Years of Rebuilding Lives"

The police department’s Victim Services Section and the Northern Virginia Coalition of Victim Service Providers are kicking off the National Crime Victims’ Rights Week with the Annual Candlelight Vigil on Sunday, April 26. The celebration to honor victims of crime has reached a milestone: 25 years ago the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) was enacted into law. Victims and victims’ advocates have increasingly received assistance, compensation and training through VOCA, which supports thousands of programs serving millions of victims every year.

The vigil begins 3 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. The keynote speaker is Susan Molinari, former Congresswoman from New York and Senior Principle in the government relations, advocacy and strategy section of Bracewell & Giuliani LLP in Washington, D.C. She was a leader in the fight for crime victims while in Congress and is credited with creating tougher laws affecting repeat rapists and child molesters.

Awards will be presented to several individuals who have distinguished themselves in their support of victim issues and concerns. Music will be provided by the W.T. Woodson High School Vocal Ensemble. The moderator again this year will be Gail Pennybacker from WJLA-Ch7 News.

The Victim Services Section of the Fairfax County Police Department helps thousands of crime victims every year and is proud to share in this vigil. This moving event, held for victims and those who serve them, is open to all citizens of the community and media. A reception will be held immediately following the program. Please join us as we support and acknowledge all crime victims and their supporters.

Please call Officer Sabrina Ruck at 703-246-2253 if you plan on attending or need additional information.
