First Quarter 2009 Crime Statistics
Overall index crime in Fairfax County dropped by almost one percent during the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same time in 2008. Index crimes, reported monthly to federal authorities, include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.
Larceny, with a two percent uptick, is the only index crime that increased in the first three months this year. Violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault) decreased by 22 percent: property crimes (burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft) fueled by larcenies, increased by less than one percent.

These statistics are used in making decisions about deployment of police resources to better respond to the needs of the community, to identify trends and to implement new and continuing strategies to enhance public safety.
