High Impact DWI Enforcement
Through April, 2008, officers arrested 850 people for driving while intoxicated. During the same time period in 2009, 1002 DWI arrests were made; an increase of 18 percent.
Five people have lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes so far this year, compared to three for the same period last year in Fairfax County. Based on the increase in the number of alcohol-related fatal crashes, and the police department’s desire to increase awareness, police are stepping up impaired driving enforcement, in an effort to reverse the trend.
Fairfax County Police officers will be joined by Virginia State Troopers from Division VII, in conducting a larger-than-usual sobriety checkpoint to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers on Saturday, June 20 from midnight until 3 a.m. Sunday in the Sully Police District.
All motorists will be stopped and drivers will be checked to assure that their abilities to drive have not been impaired by alcohol or drugs.
The High Impact DWI Enforcement initiative combines enforcement and education and is geared toward raising public awareness of drunk driving and the serious consequences it can have for all involved.
The Fairfax County Police Department takes the issue of drinking and driving seriously. This checkpoint combined with ongoing DWI enforcement initiatives throughout the county are designed to prevent alcohol related crashes and make the roadways safer.
