Alcohol Sting/Shoulder Tap in
West Springfield District
West Springfield Police District - On Wednesday, October 14, officers from the West Springfield District Station Neighborhood Patrol Unit, conducted stings at several locations in the Springfield, Fairfax, and Lorton areas of Fairfax County. A shoulder tap operation was also conducted. The sting was part of the ongoing Youth Alcohol Enforcement/Prom and Graduation campaign which was conducted using a county police cadet dressed in plain clothing to purchase alcohol. The cadet entered stores and attempted to purchase alcohol. If asked whether he was 21 years old, the cadet was to respond with his true age and/or date of birth. If asked for identification, he was to tell the clerk that he had no identification with him. If the sale of alcohol took place, the plain-clothed officer would take possession of the alcohol from the cadet and make the appropriate charge(s), along with the assistance of the uniformed officer assigned to the team.
As a result of the Sting operation, four locations were entered, with one arrest made for the illegal sale of alcohol to a minor. That offense occurred at the Giant Food at the Kings Park shopping Center in Springfield.
During the Shoulder Tap operation, 57 people were approached and asked to purchase alcohol, with no illegal transactions taking place.
The stings were conducted using one team consisting of one plain-clothed officer, two uniformed officers, and one cadet.
