Police Push Pedestrian Safety

Franconia Police District - In an effort to deter pedestrians from unsafe and illegal roadway crossings, officers from the Franconia Police District and around the county will be stepping up their education and enforcement efforts.

Police are particularly concerned over a portion of Backlick Road, between Commerce Street and Hechinger Drive, where pedestrians cross freely and frequently disregard street crossings. Officers will distribute informational flyers, along with warnings and summonses from November 21 through December 4.

Countywide, officers remind the public that they will be participating in the regional StreetSmart Campaign between November 9 and 20. StreetSmart is an annual public education and awareness campaign aimed at increasing both motorist and pedestrian knowledge on the impact of risky behaviors when driving, walking, or biking across the National Capitol Region. So far, 12 pedestrians have died in Fairfax County in 2009.
