Third Quarter 2009 Crime Statistics
For the third quarter in a row crime in Fairfax County is down. Overall index crime decreased by almost two percent during the first nine months of 2009 compared to the same time in 2008. Index crimes, reported monthly to federal authorities, include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.
Overall violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault) decreased by 12 percent. Property crimes (burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft) decreased by one percent. The only increase was in reported larcenies which were up less than one percentin the first half of this year compared to last year at this time.

These statistics are used in making decisions about deployment of police resources to better respond to the needs of the community, to identify trends and to implement new and continuing strategies to enhance public safety.
