Driver Dies in Single Car Crash

Mount Vernon Police District – Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 29 in the Alexandria portion of Fairfax County.  Ronnie L. Diggs, 51, of 8007 Murray Hill Dr. in Fort Washington, Md. was pronounced dead at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital at 6:05 p.m.

Diggs was driving a 1989 BMW northbound on Fort Hunt Road when he crossed the center line and into oncoming southbound traffic.  Investigators believe he over compensated while trying to get back into the northbound lane and hit a ditch on the right side of the road. He was partially ejected from his car when it rolled onto its roof. Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.

The only passenger in the car, a 37-year-old woman, also of Fort Washington, Md., was treated for non life-threatening injuries and released from the hospital.

Crash Reconstruction detectives responded to the scene and continue to investigate the incident.
