Woman Charged with Animal Cruelty

Mount Vernon Police District – Animal Control Officers charged Megan Barber, 33, with animal cruelty and being an unfit animal owner after spending nearly 12 hours removing animals from her home on Tuesday, December 29. Officers responded to 3427 Ramsgate Terrace shortly before 8:30 a.m. following neighbors’ complaints of foul odors coming from the home.

Authorities removed over two dozen live cats, five dogs, a rabbit, three guinea pigs, a hamster and nine birds from the home, amidst cluttered conditions including animal feces and debris. Additionally, officers also removed 28 dead animals from the premises.

The initial medical conditions of the living animals ranged from poor to good, with most appearing unclean and malnourished. All animals were transported to local veterinarians to undergo thorough assessments.

The investigation is continuing and additional charges are pending.
