Carjacking in Hybla Valley Area
Mount Vernon Police District – On Sunday, January 10, around 1:50 a.m., a couple became suspicious that a black Nissan Altima was following them on Buckman Road. They called police as the Altima pulled in front of them and three men exited with baseball bats. The 31-year-old driver was able to drive around the Altima and escape the suspects.
At Needles Place the Altima pulled in front of the victim’s car once again. The three suspects exited their vehicle, threatened the driver with baseball bats and demanded he exit his car. As the victim and his 25-year-old wife exited the car, a 36-year-old family member came to assist them. Two of the suspects then threatened the 36-year-old man and demanded his wallet. As the second victim was being robbed, the third suspect took off in the first victim’s car but crashed into a parked car. The first two suspects returned to the Altima and drove off as the third suspect fled on foot. None of the victims were injured.
An observant citizen was able to provide police with a description of the suspect vehicle and a patrol officer stopped the Altima a short distance away on Buckman Road. Rene Alvarenga, 19, of 2914 Landover Street in Alexandria, and a 15-year-old Alexandria-area male were both arrested for carjacking and robbery.
The third suspect remains at large.
