Police Thwart Formation of New Gang
Franconia District Station – Three teenaged boys were charged after a series of alleged attempts to form a new gang at Poe Middle School following the summer of 2009. The boys were charged with hazing of youth gang members which is a Class I misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a $2,500.00 fine.
The Police Department School Resource Officer worked closely with school officials after discovering gang-oriented materials on school grounds and learning that students were attempting to recruit new gang members using a MySpace page throughout the fall of 2009. Following a series of incidents, including assaults that took place at a party in Annandale off school grounds in November, officials were able to pinpoint gang leaders and charge them with hazing on Tuesday, January 19. Two of the boys are 14 years old, and one is 13.
