Police Host First Homicide Symposium
Fairfax County Police Academy – The Fairfax County Police Department, in collaboration with the Virginia Homicide Investigators Association (VHIA), is hosting it’s first-ever homicide school March 1-5, 2010 at the Fairfax County Police Academy.
With travel budgets tight, yet essential training for new investigators needed, police personnel teamed up with the VHIA, invited regional experts on homicide-related topics, and advertised the new program to police departments statewide.
The VHIA is a non-profit association, established in 1993, by a group of dedicated homicide detectives and serves as a forum to discuss and exchange information related to homicide case management and operational strategies, as well as the latest advancements in forensic science and technologies. Several Fairfax County Police detectives were instrumental in the formation of the VHIA and continue to be involved in their educational and training efforts.
Approximately 70 detectives are expected to attend the symposium, learning more about handling homicide crime scenes, working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, managing victims and witnesses, courtroom testimony, media relations, and many other topics.
Speakers include representatives from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Office of Victim’s Services, Fairfax County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, FBI, Washington Post, WJLA News 7, U.S. Marshall’s Service, as well as experienced homicide detectives from police agency’s throughout the region.
To learn more about the symposium, contact the Fairfax County Police Public Information Officeat 703-246-2253 or log onto www.vhia.org.
